"None"

Hello. I don't know if it's right to write in this way. I want to know about "none". What's the meaning and is it right that it can be either singular or plural? As far as I know, it is always singular. Thank you.

  • "None" has several meanings, and it can be both singular and plural. But, singular form is more common.

No one: None of the members has/have blue eyes. (if it is followed by a countable noun, it can be singular or plural, it depends on how many people you are referring.)

Not any: None of this information is necessary. (if it is followed by an uncountable noun, a singular verb is always used.)

Nothing: I would like some more coffee. I am sorry there is none left. (Here it is a noun.)

I hope I am correct and could help.

    • Thank you, Yasemin. It makes sense for "not any" and "nothing", but for "no one" it doesn't. Is it possible to be followed by singular countable noun?
