Oi there, folks
After going through the links given here concerning phrasal verbs I have an uncomfortable feeling that there is a gorss misinterpretation of Phasal Verbs.
Back at school, a long, long time ago, I was taught that a phrasal verb is not the same as a verb with a prepositon. The phrasal verb with its prepositon have a different meaning than a verb and the prepositon in the objective phrase, for example, phrasal verbs in an example is:
To aim = The commercial ad was aimed at making people buy a given merchandise - here it is a proper phrasal verb
but the nex example:
The thug aimed his gun at me and told me to jump out of my wallet. - here neither verbs are phrasal vrbs because here we have "aim " is a independent verb and a preposition in the objective pharase "me", whereas " jump" is a separate verb with a objective phrase "out of my wallet.
Another example can be:
Some people look down on anyone that is different from them - here we have a typical phrasal verb ... but
I.got dizzy when I looked down from my balcony on the 10th floor - here the verb and the preposition are separate and independent words.
To sbstantiate my claim, I take the liberty to quote uncle google:
A phrasal verb is a phrase (such as take off or look down on) that combines a verb with a preposition or adverb or both and that functions as a verb whose meaning is different from the combined meanings of the individual words.
I hope I did not mess up things for you and that you got my point.
Oi Rys.
Thank you very much for your detailed comment.
I got your point.
Summary is:
Phrasal verb makes different meaning from its main verb.
Sometimes look like phrasal verb used in the sentence but actually not, they are independent.
Have a nice time!
