It comes from the islands where the children go door to door singing "kalanda" Christmas carols using triangles, guitars, accordions and harmonicas.
The children carry wooden boats with lights to find their way or with enough space to store treats given to them by people. Many people worked as seamen and at Christmas used to return home after such a long time at sea.
Their wives to show how glad they were and to welcome themthey were decorating wooden boats. They were placed near the door or fire with the bow pointing inwards symbolising that the boats are making their journey towards the the mainland. They also put some coins in it to symbolise riches entering in their houses.
