I've been a month teaching English. Could you help me?

I teach every day in the morning, at 06.45 till 07.30. I get difficult to make them speak up use English in their daily. They and I speak more than languages: Javanese, Madurase, Indonesian. Sometimes I ask them about how they learnt Indonesian when they were young. The got confused to answer, because they unciously did it. At that time they got massive access to Indonesian. They watch TV, listening to radio, reading book, and everything in Indonesian language.

But now, they learnt English, and Arabic too. They use Arabic more than English. They learn religious subjects almost along the day, the book is Arabic book.

Whereas, the leader of this school wants me to make the students speak English in their daily. I have been thinking and doing some method and technique to do that, but, until now, we have passed a month, I don't find the progress.

I need your Idea.

I think you should make them motivated by creating challenging situations,like introduction:how they can introduce themselves to eachother or even to foreigners who visit their coutry,telling them that there are marks to those who try to use English ,....etc .
Also when,teachig English ,you should write the English words during teachig to kow abou them because students can not deal with you or uderstand the way you pronouce some words.
Of course,these some suggestions and there are alot that help i this field .

Hi Sunardi,

You haven't written about the methods and tecqniques which you are working with.Without knowing them, it is difficult to recommend something. If you want your students to speak more English,you should focus more on speaking activities and maybe it is a good idea to teach English from English.As a teacher it is up to you to allow them to speak Arabic or not in your class.

You can find some activities which they can work on as groups. In group works they should speak in English to each other .Don't bother about the grammar too much,you should shift the importance to speaking. Examples of speaking activities ; give each group 20 words and ask them to make up a story ..but they shouldn't write it down,they should just tell it to their classmates. In the beginning or at the end of leson they play "WHO/WHAT am I ?"...there are quite some fun activities you can use in your classes. Just open up a subject about current events,let them give their opinion..organize debates. Give them an example of an situation,let them improvise a sketch/scenario..

I hope these ideas can be helpful or maybe you are already doing these
