Dunking in basketball stars feels satisfying—but it’s also one of those moves that doesn’t always trigger when you expect it. If you’ve ever tried to go for a dunk and ended up doing a normal shot instead, you’re not alone. The trick is understanding when the game actually allows a dunk.
Get Close Enough to the Hoop
First thing: you must be very close to the basket. Dunking only triggers when your player is inside a certain range. If you’re even slightly too far, the game will force a regular shot instead.
So don’t rush it from mid-range—drive all the way in.
Face the Basket Properly
Position matters more than people think. You need to be facing the hoop directly. If your angle is off, the game might not register a dunk attempt.
Try to line yourself up straight before going in.
Create Space Before Driving
If a defender is right in front of you, your dunk will likely get blocked—or not trigger at all.
Use a quick move:
Fake left, go right
Step back, then drive forward
Even a small gap is enough to make the dunk animation trigger cleanly.
Don’t Swipe Like a Normal Shot
Here’s where most players mess up.
For a dunk, your swipe should be:
Short and direct toward the rim
Not too long (or it becomes a jump shot)
Think of it more like a quick push than a full swipe.
Timing Is Everything
You can’t just run in and spam the input. There’s a tiny moment where dunking “activates.”
If you swipe too early → nothing happens
If you swipe too late → you shoot instead
It takes a few tries, but once you feel it, it becomes consistent.
Quick Tips to Remember
Stay close to the basket
Face the hoop directly
Create a bit of space
Use a short swipe
Don’t rush the timing

Dunking every time in Basketball Stars isn’t guaranteed, but once you understand the conditions, it starts to feel way more reliable. After that, it’s just practice—and a bit of confidence when you go in for the finish.
