What about to be well educated and inteligent? If your interlocutor can't even support any topic, then he/she is not a good conversationalist:)
Roman, Not everyone is educated and intelligent but some illiterate people can talk about at least 'some things' more politely and interesting rather than educated and intelligent people. In my opinion, no need to be intelligent to have a pleasant interesting conversation. Right ? :)

First, one should be a good listener, respectful to others opinions , beliefs, cultures despite of any kind of differences and a bit capable of expressing their opinions while communicating. That's what makes people a good conversationalist, in my opinion.

Anyway, you can try starting a convo asking people about their fav stuff. People love to talk about themselves and the sh*t they love, so you can let them talk non-stop while you just entertain yourself listening to music in your head.
