I was just going through some mispronounced words and my eyes got stuck on the word "Often" . In most of the dictionaries the pronunciation tells that the "T" of the word "Often" remains silent. And from my early stage of education I have always pronounced it as OF-EN, and spelling with an audible T is out of rules.

But i got a website where i found this

" The word “often” can be pronounced with a silent “t” (the more common pronunciation) or with an audible “t.” Both are correct, according to The American Heritage Dictionary of the English Language (4th ed.)."

So i am a little bit confused. Is there anybody out who can explain it to me?

Thank You

  • If I use the word "Often" I pronounce the T....I will also express the Of as Off....so it sounds like OffTen to others.

  • Both look correct to me, dear. Personally, I like often with an audible “t” better.

  • Ofen is commonly used.  T in often is silent.
