• How often and how much do you read in English?
• How do you choose texts/books for reading?
• Share what you gain from reading? Probably you have some really efficient methods to make it rewarding.
• If you feel have some problems with reading, again, share them and perhaps we can solve it together.
Any experience/advice will be appreciated.
A couple of words about how I read. I try to read in English daily. Mostly I read blogs.
I check out blogs of my MyEC friends almost everyday (via RSS, so it's not that difficult). Also I visit the main blog page on MyEC from time to time and read blogs when the beginning made me attracted. Besides, I read some blogs written by native speakers (I do it sporadically) and these days I am reading The Polyglot Project, which was written by people with different backgrounds (some of them also were natives of English).
The main thing in all this is following.
How do you pick up correct patterns of the language (phrases, idioms, styles of speech)?

Thanks, jean, for sharing your experience about reading books. And especially I am grateful about mentioning the book you are reading. It should be a great one if it is supplied with such incredible videos here http://www.datehookup.com/Thread-516210.htm These things are what we call "must see."
By the way, I also feel uncomfortable when reading so called texting language, such as "I w8 4u", and so on. It looks like html-coding. :)
Hi Oksana........reading is fun when your interest is into it. Some people read to get information, some read to gain familiarity with words and phrases, some read just to kill time and some read to look for something....... every reading is effective if the purpose behind it is met.
About my opinion? Extensive reading is the only way to learn everything (be it grammar check, vocabulary building, enhancing comprehension, etc.) if learning is what you are seeking for. It will become the best if you consider reading a joyful activity.
.................just want to include also that READING MAKES ONE WISE.
Beautifully said, anele!
You know, your expression of "extensive reading" made me ponder. I didn't consider my English under such angle before. Probably, "before", it was too early to think of it. Now it's a very tasty thought for me.
Also when reading, I feel like a dog, happy with finding something valuable. So, I do consider reading a joyful activity.
Thanks, anele! I like your comments, they are always deeply thoughtful.
Hi Karenina,
Commenting on MyEC helps to keep your English active. The same thing is with me.
Besides, I am happy to admit that the whole this discussion is a great reminder, because everyday I receive really thoughtful answers with encouraging experience.
Also I started to gather a collection of lyrics here http://my.englishclub.com/group/englishworkshop/forum/topics/love-o...
Although it's small yet, you are welcome to try it! ;)
Hi Huga Harun,
First of all, altough I am not a teacher, I think your English is not bad at all! Besides, don't worry about telling us your troubles with reading. Actually, the topic was designed to discuss how to overcome the problems related to reading and increasing learner's vocabulary. Remember, if you're given lemons, ask for sugar. ;)
It's not that simple to suggest you a piece of read which would captivate you completely, the more so unless you specify your favourite topics (not what you need but what you like or even adore).
For example, a couple of days ago I started reading http://spanish.about.com/ (can you guess why?) But that's my case.
So, what are your favourite topics to think of, to discuss, and, of course, to read?
I agree that compulsory topics might make you die of boredom. Well, supposing I had a compulsory topic (but a free choice of resourses), what would I do? I would use Google images. Yes, don't wonder! Often, the websites which provide good illustrations also provide good writing. :) Needless to say, illustrations help to get the picture of the subject.
Regarding the subject of fiction literature, kindly read Tanya's reply above. It's more than a competent word.
Good luck! :)
Good luck, Huda! =)
I really use Google images actively... This is also my online picture vocabulary. ;)
Hi nguyen ngan,
I also mostly learn online. Since almost everything is translated in English, it's easy to find online whatever you want. And online dictionaries are always at hand! ;)
Thus, it's much easier to study English online and, what is also very important, it's more pleasant. Do you agree? :)
