It is not necessary. If your partner (female is richer than you, let her pay). My wife is richer than me, she always bear most of our expenses, and I do not mind.

Tam, I think it can vary depending on who was invited. If I invited a lady to dinner, I should pay or if she prefers we should split the cost. If she invited me to dinner then she should pay or at least sincerely offer to.
Here in Japan I’ve found that the tradition seems to hold that people split the cost equally. Is that true for Tokyo?
