Most EC members are nice and very helpful. I think you all agree with that. But, we can't deny the fact that there are some rude members here who like to fight or try to abuse members sexually. They definitely are here not to learn English.

My question are:

1.How do you deal with them?

2. What the best ways to deal with them in your opinion?

  • Hi,

Last night I had an interesting chat experience to share. A rude member came to main chat room and started to write a racist comment against certain race and religion. It happened that most members who were online that time come from the race and religion.

One or two members were a bit upset and asked him to stop. Soon, I realized that this was the same member who get banned over and over because the same attitude. I warned members who were chatting there because I knew two or more member had met him before. They didn't remember because he always uses different names, but with the same profile picture.

Once, they recognized him, the situation changed. Instead of angry, we made a fun of him because we knew that it's his tricks to provoke us. Well, when we changed our topic and more members from different countries joined us, he tried to provoke us by asking a provocative question about the topic. But, we didn't buy it. Eventually he left since no one really cared about what he wrote.

I think it's important for us to know about this kinds of people that Internet calls us trolls. I want to share some links that might help you:

  • 1. Mostly I ignore them and try to spot this people. I will hold myself from them, I won't go and have closer contact with them so the possibility of being abused is little. That is why I don't get close to people so easy.

    2. Why do I ignore them? Because I am not sure reporting them would be much useful. They will always come back. Even if they are not coming back, there are still another rude people everywhere with another name. You can't really made them vanished I guess... Not from this site, nor from this world. Not as long as the world still spinning. Euh, what am I talking about? :D :D

    • thank for your opinion papap. I'm familiar with your opinion and in some levels, I agree with that. No matter how hard we try, there are always rude people around us, on the Internet or in our real world.

But, do you think some rude members here take advantage on this attitude? I can see why they always coming back. It's because they see most members here prefer to ignore their behaviors or don't even know how to protect themselves. As long as the admin and moderators are not online, they think they are safe and can do whatever they do.

I think if each of us willing to report these rude members, at least for once. The chance for them to come back will be reduced because they are outnumbered by us.

    • thank for your opinion, Arif... I like the point 'strengthen mentality'. I have been here for almost a year and spend many times on main chat room, so I can see that point. Practice tolerance? To other members maybe. But, I saw some rude members took advantage on people's tolerance, permissive and apathetic responses.

  • When I come across those rude members, I take a screen-shot to prove what he/she has done and report that member. I did this many times, hehe :) But at first i warn that member, although i have never met a member who changed that rude style after being warned. Because, if one is abusing and has wicked-will they will continue this.

I don't use chatroom much often, so i don't know what is going on there. In my opinion, chatroom is the best place for abusing. I don't like there. On the other hand, there are good people using there.

And, I respect the people who choose to ignore rude members. That's another way to prevent them.

    • thank for your opinion, Yasemin. Yes, I agree with you. I warned several members who I called friends, only to see that they threated me like their enemy. So, I stop to warn people. After all, most of them are grown up people who should responsible with their own attitudes :)

    • thank for your opinion, Dr llody :)

  • When I was new here I got to chat with some members. Later, I found out that there are members who are not here to learn English rather to harassed other members. I was one of the victim before. The incident that had happened to me made me realize that I should stop chatting in the chat room. Not only that, I also ignored those who are attempting to chat with me unless they are my good friends here. Moreover, I concentrated in exchanging ideas and opinions in different groups which can help me enhance my English.

    • I'm sorry to hear that Jane. May I know how did you response them after you knew/saw their rudeness? I mean did you report them or just ignored them?

Well, I hope those bad experiences won't stop you to keep using MyEC to improve your English. Spending more times on group is helpful for me too. Thank for sharing your story and have a good weekend.

    • I just ignored them. That time I was only new her so I didn`t know how to report the said incident. So, I just diverted my mind to groups which are very helpful to me. I also find friends there who respect opinions and views.
