What really matters here is that what they understood for happiness is different from what happiness might be for us.
They found happiness in getting together everyday with friends, share moments with the family, and see the good through simplicity. On the other hand, these things, although not disappeared, were losing effect thanks to technology, and now we find happiness in a more "material" way.
So I suppose that we are equally 'happy', but that happiness is represented differently.
No we are not happier than our fore-father...and they are not happier than us..
...because happiness is not something related in time it's something related in faith God said in quoran :
"Those who believe (in the Qur´an), and those who follow the Jewish (scriptures), and the Christians and the Sabians,- any who believe in Allah and the Last Day, and work righteousness, shall have their reward with their Lord; on them shall be no fear, nor shall they grieve."
Happiness in my opinion is accepting of everything without worries about anything that we can not get in life, or always feel quite enough with everything we have. Notable we have to make every endeavour first and the last thing is accepting action for the result. I am still learning for that.
No matters to facing different circumtances, because standarization of happyness of everyone will different. So be grateful for eveything in our life.

We have more freedom and humans rights are more protected nowadays and I think we are happier than our fore-father.
