Many days ago there was a poor woodcutter in a small village. He lived with his wife in a hut. He was  very generous to all and always ready to bend over backward.

One day an old neighbor (an old lady) asked him to collect some honey from the jungle as she had been suffering from cold for a long time. The woodcutter did agree and the very next day despite the foggy cold weather he started his journey to the far away jungle with his axe and a basket. There was little food in the basket made by his beloved wife.

On the half-way the woodcutter felt hungry. So, he sat under a tree and started eating. He just grasped his meal twice then he heard someone was asking to share his food with her. He wondered not to see anyone else around. Then he saw a blue bird on a bough. He asked himself, ‘Can a bird speak like a human being?’ The bird seemed read his mind and said, ‘ Listen man, I am really too hungry, would you please give me some food from your basket?’ Then the man did not hesitate and gave her a piece of cake. The bird seemed very satisfied and in return gave him a little plant and told, ‘Look man, it is a plant which will give you exotic fruits in near future, carry it with you and plant it after returning home.” Then in a wink the bird disappeared!

After that the woodcutter started his journey again but In the mean time, the day worn away. So,he had to stop to get some sleep. He was half asleep  suddenly he heard a horse neigh. He woke up with fear. But the horse immediately said, Oh, no, don’t worry I just came to ask you for some help. Can you give me some food?’ Actually there was nothing left in the basket but the man made up his mind to offer the little plant to the horse.

Then the horse came out from the disguise. And, woodcutter saw the old toothless lady in front of him! The lady said, ‘How come I am here, you are thinking about it, right? Okay, let me say, I am a witch who live near your hut. But, I became envious to see your popularity to the village people. So, I wanted to do something bad to you. But, let me say, today I am so impressed to know you by your good deeds and from this moment onward I want to change myself into a good witch forever! Thank you so much!’ Knowing all, the man became numb and got back home on witch’s wings!

And, from the next morning village people got another helpful person and they lived happily.

    Thanks, Elen!

  • Here is that we say, the good wins the bad. Nice story, bet :)

  • Yes, you can say so if you mean that. I will explain, I am a very generous person, I love people, and help them, but I never bend over behind.

  • Thanks then can I say my father bends over backward to help the poor people
  • Well, TO BEND OVER BACKWARDS means to make every effort to achieve something, especially to be fair or helpful. However, this expression often means to be too obliging, to fawn, to cringe.

  • opsss...wanted to ask about bend over backward...I know it's a phrase but wanted examples, please!

  • Happy new year to you too!
Thanks a lot for your answer to my questions, see you around!

  • Hi, dear Bet! Happy New Year! Hope, you had great celebration.

Well, let me answer your questions.

    1. We COLLECT something if we bring together a number of things, accumulate something diring some period of time or systematically seek and acquire (items of a particular kind) as a hobby. Here are a few examples:

He went round the office collecting old coffee cups.

She collect rainwater to use it on the garden.

    He started collecting stamps.

We GATHER something if we bring something together and take in from scattered places or sources. So, we GATHER everything (mushrooms, berries, honey, etc) in the forest.

    2. FAR AWAY can't be used as an adjective. You can say either FAR jungle or FARAWAY jungle.

    3. We can say NEAR THE HOUSE aa well as NEAR TO THE HOUSE. But we say only CLOSE TO.

If there are other questions, just ask them, OK?
