My favorite holiday in Russian culture is New Year's Eve that is celebrated on the 31 st of December.
There is always a festive dinner in every home. Families and friends get together to stay up long during the night to see the old year off and to see new year in. There is lots of music, songs, fireworks and joy on this night. Everybody is happy and full of hope for positive changes in the coming year.Children get gifts from the traditional Russian gift-giver named Grandfather Frost and from his assistant Snow Maiden. See the picture above. Enjoy!
Mari, which holiday celebrated in the US do you like, I wonder?
As for celebrating New Year's Day Russian style, it would truly be difficult to do it in a foreign country, but you could do it with your family and friends too. It would take special effort, but it would be fun to tell your freinds about your native country.
Dear Fancy,
I have seen the picture of Spring Festival you posted on your page. When is the Spring Festival celebrated? In March, April or in May? Is it a fixed date?
My favorite Festival is Spring Festival! It is important festival for Chinese! So every people have about seven day' s holiday to share with their families! Some people work in the other place,so they can go back their hometown when Spring Festival. When Spring Festival ,we always buy a lot of tasty food and have display of firework.
wow! Nutt, thanks for the nice post about Songkran Festival! I would love to celebrate all those holidays. Holiday celebrations would start for me from April 12. it's my birthday. :) I didn't know that my BD is the Eve of Thailand New year's Day! Wow, wow!
Oh, yes, Russian New year was a substitute for Christmas for many years during USSR times. People preserved those Christmas traditions in New Year celebration though. Take gift-giving and gift-givers. The old Gradfather Frost traditon actually has pagan roots. Russians worshipped natural phenomena. As for the Assistant named Snegurochka, she appeared from the fairy-tale. She is supposed to be granddaughter of Granpa Frost.
Russian Christmas is on January 7 and this holiday is not a big thing like New year. Of course, we all celebrate it, but in a quiet family way.

I love spring too. It is a true revival of body and soul after winter hibernation.
Have a nice day!
