Hi everyone,

Today I'd like to talk about a movie- The first grader, which is a true and inspiring story of an 80 something man called Maruge from Kenya Kenyan. When he was young, he joined Mau Mau rebellion of fighting for freedom of his country. After getting information of free education for everyone promoted by the government on the radio, Maruge eagerly headed for the town for studying. He had to sell his sheep so as to buy books and uniform.

Everyday Maruge spent two hours going to school on foot. The teacher ,Jane, was moved by his desperation of studying, so tried for all she was worth to help him strive for the opportunity of going to school. But, the officials and parents thought he would deprive their children of educational resources, so Jane and Maruge faced lots of challenges, overcoming the difficulties finally, and got attention from international media to report it. The Guinness World Record even listed him as being the oldest person in the world to start primary school. Anything is possible and not late as long as we still alive. Thanks for listening, everybody. Have a nice day. ◕‿◕

  • Hello Tara,

Thank you so much for taking time to listen carefully and comment on my blog. I'm really appreciated.

Sometimes I may misuse between the country's name and the person who is from, such as German v.s. Germany, Greek v.s. Greece. I was wondering if I could just add "er" after the country like Germaner, just like people living in New York can be called New Yorker, that would be easier to remember. :)

I'm deeply indebted to you for your kind and patience on my "Chinish" and weak pronunciation. The [sɛl] and [sel] are really tricky that I couldn't sound them properly in a short time. I need more practice. Thanks for reminder, Tara.

  • This sounds like a really interesting story! I'm going to watch the movie! Fantastic post, Grace!
