Typhoon Ondoy (international name “Ketsana”) hit the Philippines long hard like a thief in the night. Many homes were ravaged and submerged underwater by the floods placing the lives of millions of Filipino people in great peril. As of this writing, a lot of our Filipino brothers and sisters are still awaiting rescue on their rooftops. Hungry, cold and sick, they can only hang on to hope that the nightmare will be over soon. Some of them are still searching for a displaced relative or two and praying for their safety. Some were stranded since Saturday and could not go home to aid their loved ones because floods are still blocking main thoroughfares. Others are already understandably hysterical because they have lost properties and some relatives as well.Rains have stopped here and I’ve heard and read in reports that some areas have already seen the sun shine this morning. But could this merely be the so-called “calm before the bigger storm”? Let us hope not. But let us not let our guard down just yet.To the volunteers who shared their time and effort for this cause. So many people depend on your strength, optimism, kindheartedness and enthusiasm. We have heard of people who have sacrificed their own lives already just to save our kababayans (countrymen). May God bless you all and give you strength.Although we do not ask for it, should there be another storm, I know we can get through it. We are Filipinos. We are strong!
