Hi All......I was reading Bet's blog regarding her uncle and his spooky experience when walking home one evening and it brought to mind a story my family told me about my mother.  Explaining the title of this blog as you know all countries have their religious affinities and such.....so here goes.

One chilly fall evening, as a young girl, my mother made the decision to visit one of her friends.  She was born in the 30's and she lived in the countryside instead of a town, walking was the most common mode of transportation.  Many lived along the railroad tracks as did my grandparents, at that time, so she walked a long way down the tracks to reach her friends house.

The early evening passed and it had gotten dark and my mother was still not home.  My grandmother was becoming anxious and decided to follow and see if she was okay.  Granny and my mother's older sister Virginia (Jenny for short) dawned coats, gloves and headscarves which they wound around their heads and pulled up on their faces(a cold wind was blowing) then headed down the railroad tracks to find my mom.

My mother loved to sing so my grandmother and aunt heard her way before they saw her coming up the tracks toward them, for she was singing at the top of her lungs.  So they kept moving forward to intercept her.  Unfortunately, once they became visible to my mother, it scared her and she crossed from one set of tracks to the other and began to walk a little faster, so as she flew passed her mom and sister paying them no attention, they fell in behind her and began walking faster as well......my mother never stopped singing.....but she sped up even more and walked off and left the two women behind her.  She reached home, and as she came through the door of the house, her other sister Ruth asked her......"Did you see mommy and Jenny?". By this time Ruth could see my mother looked pale and was out of breath as she said......"NOOOOOO, but I did see two old women from Jerusalem!!!!".  LOL  I guess my mother's imagination had run away with her because it was dark and she was frightened, but she was also aware that she had broken the rules by staying out so late.  I have to believe she never considered anyone would come looking for her.  So in her terrified state, along with her guilty conscience she thought surely God had sent two old women from Jerusalem after her......LOL  I don't remember if any punishment was given to her for breaking the rules but I am thinking the scare was punishment enough to stop her from doing it again.....LOL

We all had a good laugh in the later years upon hearing this story.  Anyone who knew her would never have dreamed of such a thing.  It was very much out of character for the woman we knew as my mother!!!

Thank you Bet for jogging my memory of this event.  Have a great day everyone!!!

  • When a person is scared , especially in the dark , no doubt that their senses become sharp suddenly and when your walking with those sharp senses and see some shadowy figures behind you , obviously you will sprint lol , though I searched about the two women from Jerusalem and nothing popped up , I wonder what the actual tale is.

  • Thank you so much Kara!!!!

  • Lol, this is funny but I don't understand why the two old women from Jerusalem (granny and aunt) didn't say anything to awaken her.. It seems as they went along with her fiction :D

  • Some people writtings awake things inside of us or even help us to discover our feeling . Thanks for sharing :)

  • Roman....LOL  Thank you for reading my blog.......I think my mother felt guilty for being out so late......and also the dark.......I am not sure where she came up with two old women from Jerusalem........LOL....maybe she thought God had sent them to punish her........who knows???  But it was funny.

Yes Bet....I agree......hugggggggggg.....and you are most welcome!!!

  • Dear Paula, thank you so very much to write on this topic, because, it shows us again sometimes we can be frightened just seeing our own shadows and relatives! Yes, we are used to listening about unearthly creatures and many more things. But, we should talk about in this issue less because most of the time we just heard have no evidence. And, we should not tell such type of scary stories to the kids to avoid your mom's situation and not to make them scarycats..lol. But, I am really happy that they were two human beings not others.
