Yes, I mean 'top members', not 'star members'. Just as you know, it's hard to choose the monthly star members, especially when we're trying to choose someone who's never been chosen as a star member.
The thing is some of the star members may not have been aware they were star members because they didn't visit MyEC much - they were't really active members and other members didn't think they deserved it. That's to say, some of the star members are controversial.
Thankfully, the admin of MyEC has noticed the grumbles. So, here comes the 'TOP MEMBERS THIS MONTH'.
Did you notice the links at the top of MyEC's main page (just below the star members's pictures)? Top members will be chosen by the system (algorithmically) rather than by the recommendation of the admin or moderators or some other members who have helped to choose star members.
Do you think it's a good idea to choose top members every month? If yes, then why do you think so? If not, what do you suggest the admin do?

i think it is a good idea to do that because this encourages many memebers to do their best when
working on a topic that can be uinque for others to value or be useful for them .

Thanks for the comments. The system algorithm sounds smarter than we thought. So, it's a good idea to choose 'Top Members' (by the amazing system alrorithm).

Ugh, I've been away just a week or so and I've missed lot of stuff... Now it seems there is not even the 'Star Members' feature! Oh my! haha...
Anyway, imho I think is more useful just to feature topics and entries (blogs, forums, pictures...) because that helps to give more feedback to that content.
About being a 'top' or 'star' member, well... I can feed my ego myself, I don't need that XD
To my mind the system is far more objective than human pickers, and I assure you that, for humans, objectively choosing STAR members month after month (and taking into account that some members' profiles are set to private and some members have already been stars) is a far from trivial task :)
Having read through all the comments so far on Expector's excellent blog post, I fear there may be a misunderstanding about the system algorithm that chooses TOP members etc. This is not based simply on "statistics" of the number of visits or activities. The algorithm takes various factors into account, including comments, shares and likes. To this extent it is in fact similar to "voting" as has been proposed by some members.
Wow! I'm glad so many members are taking part in the discussion. However, it seems this discussion will place our admin in a dilemma:)
Maybe I should put in my two cents' worth: On the one hand...on the other hand...
If members are asked to vote for star members, may you assure a member who casts his vote should have no other accounts. By the way, how will you invite members for voting? when most of the blogs are commented by certain members. The voters who when themselves are not active, how can they decide good and the better members for this title. I think let the admin do his job. I always ask myself many times what is benefit of being star member in our professional life or in our careers. The selection of star members on merit benefit this site itself not the members. Whatever criteria may be adopted, but he honesty is the best policy.
