The Wise King

Recently, I watched a movie - a masterpiece - from my film collection; rewatched actually - going down the memory lane, ya know?

"[...]there was this king and he ruled over his kingdom. Right in the middle of the kingdom there was a well. That's where everybody drank. One night, this witch came along and she poisoned the well. And the next day, everybody drank from it except the king and they all went crazy. They got together in the street and they said, "We got to get rid of the king, 'cause the king is mad." And then that night, he went down and he drank from the well. And the next day all the people rejoiced because their king had regained his reason.

Serpico (1973)

Doing what is well-liked is a helluva lot different from doing what is right. How many times did you choose to conform to an idea or a cause that you knew for sure was against everything that is right and just? How many times did you close your eyes, drank from the poisoned well and said, "Screw it. What's the worst that could happen"?

  • That massacre was brutal. Listening to Pacino yelling in Spanish, though. XD

  • Oh, you know? I didn't know what was 'Attica' till now (I googled it) XD   I guess it's one of these historical events that are part of the culture of that country but it's not so well-known in other parts of the world. In the spanish version, Pacino says the line: 'do you remember Attica?', but the rest of the 'shouting scene' they replaced the word 'Attica' by 'Murders!', I guess because I might not be the only one in Spain who doesn't know what was that --phew! XD So that was like 'lost in translation'...

Anyway, dubbed versions should be considered sacrilegious crimes. Fortunatelly now is more easy to find movies in the original version or subtitled.

  • ⓔⓡⓩⓐaaaaaaaaa!

    Long time. Yup. Why not?

    You're welcome.tumblr_lvtzqtWkqU1qdxdu7.gif

  • My dear Risty,

You got it. You got it fine. Honey, I don't wanna overwhelm you, but Strasberg, Lumet, Kazan, Scorsese... I can go on an' on an' on.

it’s better to be unique from time to time and the world will go against you is kinda challenging.

    Love me some challenge.

  • [...]the ship's wood is rotten, there's no point in trying to fix it with patches: Sink the ship and start from the scratch.

     MARYMARYMARYMARY,

Couldn't agree more.  "Dog day Afternoon!"? Now who's reading minds? Dang girl! This scene always gets me:86.gif

Pacino said it wasn't in the script. Merely an improv. Genius!

P.S. Bothering me? Far from it. I enjoyed reading your comment. Always a pleasure. Thanks for stopping by.

  • Dear Rosemary,

Nice insight! Thanks for your comment.

  • Dear A738a, first, give me that list I want to watch some masterpiece… I’m done with my boredom now. :D

I remember one ancient greek philosopher taught us that “what is right is right even if nobody does it, what is wrong is wrong even if everybody is doing it” , or I’m wrong, maybe Aquinas…hahaha, anyway, people tend to conform to avoid further aggression, to satisfy someone, to maintain peace and to live in harmony. It’s good though, but not to the extent that you will lose yourself like you can’t decide which is right from wrong.

What? If you can’t beat them, join them stunts left???

I don’t know if I get the point here but this is what I got from this nice blog, that I know conveys something so deep…

    Thanks for sharing.

P.S. it’s better to be unique from time to time and the world will go against you is kinda challenging.

  • AWWWWW!! I LOVE this movie, this Pacino's looks and Sidney Lumet!! ^_^

Ugh it's been so long since I've watched this movie that I definitely have to re-watch it again!! Right now I can't remember this story in the movie, but that's the good thing about having a shitty memory: I can watch movies and read books 3 or 4 times and enjoy as if it was the first one XD

I think this is an eternal dilemma in the human being history. We are social animals by nature... But that 'nature' can also 'kill us' :/  More than once in my day to day something happens that recalls me a lot of other stories, such as the movie 'The Invasion of the Body Snatchers', The Emperor's New Clothes' tale by Andersen and overall, the Kafka's quote: "In man's struggle against the world, bet on the world."

I also pick indiduality even if that means that you can end up alone and even paying a high price for that. And I also agree when you say that "things may get a lil chaotic, so what"... Yeah! SO WHAT!   Ppl are so afraid of that... For instance, in my country (like in many other 'democratic' countries) the policy is full of corruption. There are two main parties and both just want to reach the power to continue with their own business. They don't give a sh*t about any citizens' problems and every mandate is like to be living in the 'Emperor's New Clothes' tale, but without the kid at the end telling what's going on, because that would make you a dangerous anti-establishment or 'unpatriotic' citizen... And that's how it goes. That's how dangerous is to look away.  But I'm from the opinion that if the ship's wood is rotten, there's no point in trying to fix it with patches: Sink the ship and start from the scratch. People could leave everything, take the streets for months and make the markets crash... And just like that we could have a chance to build a good new ship without rotten corrupt powers. And yes, that would be super chaotic and we'd end up sleeping under bridges --well, I'd go to the coast, to sleep in the beach :P   Our lives would be more hard... but we'd get a more decent society and probably our grandchildren and their kids would finally live in a more worthy world.

Woah look at that! What a speech I made, now I need some water XD  Sorry, I couldn't stop, I'm really interested on this topic...

Okay I don't bother you more, now I feel like re-watching Serpico... and Dog day Afternoon!
Thanks for sharing! I love your blogs! ^_^

  • Well, I'd look up "parable" first. This is an allegory, Peppo. But if you're wondering I'm gonna rush to my morality doom like lemmings; I'm afraid you're gonna be disappointed.

  • I don't know about Mr. Al-Hakim, but whomever wrote it deserves a Congressional Medal of Honor.
