The Swan Maiden, a tragic fairy tale

Swan Lake, The Nutcracker, La Bayadere, Giselle, ...

A ballerina in a pink tutu brings to mind, right? Like Rose Day, Thinking Day and any other Days; there's a Ballet Day and it's on February 7th. Why? Well, because ballet was introduced to the US on February, 1827 at the Bowery Theater. Plus, February 7, 1668 was the day when the Dutch Prince William III danced in the premiere of the “Ballet of Peace.”

Let's skip the niceties, shall we? Whenever I see a ballerina performing on a stage, something in my guts tells me that maybe she's in excruciating agony right now and that smile which appears on her face every now and then is nothing but a flawless public facade to mask the private pain and despair. Those silk shoes hide black nails, swollen wounds, and deformed toes brilliantly. That's right, folks. I present to you the cost of applause:

    Yup, he's pretty awesome.

  • AG, I know for some people who is not into art things is hard to understand that, for good professionals of any artistic discipline, their work is not just a 'work'. It's like a religion. The good professionals don't look for the 'applause' as you said. They just need to express themselves and they can't help but doing that through art. It's a kind of vital need.

Look the example I gave in my comment: Ángel Corella is a dancer who left the glory of these 'applauses' you talk about for trying to spread the culture of ballet. He left a country that was giving him 'applauses', success, recognition and where he was earning a big amount of money just for pure love to his job.

If you've ever felt passion for doing something, then I guess you'll understand a lil bit what i'm trying to say.

A738a, yes, Dave Grohl is another good example of a good professional musician :)

  • why do they need to go through an agony for the cost of applause!!!!

Because of their passion for dancing, music, ART!

This is Dave Grohl's blood splattered guitar after his first practice for a comeback gig in Mexico.2013FooFighters_BloodyPick_211113.article_x4.jpg

Is he fishin' for compliment or a round of applause? I don't think so. So shut it.

  • I hardly watch the ballet dance and really unaware behind the pain .. now, I know, how much the cost of the applause..

  • Sometimes, I think that human being is silly.. why do they need to go through an agony for the cost of applause!!!!

  • A lot of anger! I feel ya. He felt unappreciated and nobody acknowledged him in his own country therefore, he decided to leave his home, but at least they didn't distinguish his talent there. When he retired from the American Ballet Theater, New York Times wrote,

“Dancers like Angel Corella are hard to come by, and that speaks to more than just the radiance of his technique. He’s generous with his talent too.

    That's somethin', huh?

  • I think most dance companies now employ a physiotherapist.Hopefully less damage to their feet.

    Well, that's good news!

  • I deeply admire ballet dancers. It's a really hard discipline and lot of people aren't aware of it, but you can compare the hard work of ballet dancers to the work of athletes training for the Olympics. They are like athletes as well.

My most favorite dancer is Ángel Corella. He's incredibly good, one of the best dancers of his generation. He left the American Ballet Theatre for trying to establish the first ballet company in Spain. He left the glory of a country that loves him and was paying his work very well for coming to his country (Spain) and try to spread the ballet's culture. But this f*ck**g stupid country of mine didn't give a sh*t (because here people only care about the stupid football) So he had to give up some years later and he came back to America... And that's a pretty good example of how lot of very good artists and professionals are kind forced to leave my country looking for some recognition abroad. (And that's also why I hate football so much)

Thanks for the topic... even if I got pissed off myself thinkin' about it :/

  • Dear A738a, Very sad to see their feet like this is int. It must be very painful. So all those successful ballerina's got painful feet then

Most of the girls in our School imagining they were ballerinas or princess. Some of them dance very good.

I think most dance companies now employ a physiotherapist.Hopefully less damage to their feet.

Thank you for sharing this blogs with those painful pictures.

  • The more you know, kiddo.
