Ernest Hemingway, was one of the American novelists, who left behind an impressive body of work and an iconic style of writing. Aside from his novels like "A Farewell to Arms", "The Sun Also Rises", "The Old Man and the Sea", "For Whom the Bell Tolls", etc., he was also famous for his short stories.
One of his friends mentioned a story about Hemingway's get-together with his close friends in a bar. They challenged each other to write the saddest, shortest story that they could improvise at once. While everybody was thinking over their plot, Hemingway suggested his will be the shortest, and he will win the bet. He wrote it on a napkin and needless to say he won! This was the story:
