The Oxford's Word of the Year is not a word :/

For the first time ever, the 'Oxford Dictionaries Word of the Year' is not a word... but an emoji! How weird is that??    And the award goes for one particular emoji: the 'Face with Tears of Joy'!  As you can see, it's very happy for this:

The Oxford Dictionaries' blog says that this emoji was chosen as "the 'word' that best reflected the ethos, mood, and preoccupations of 2015"  (more info here)
I feel that the Oxford Dictionaries guys are being kind of sarcastic here. Looking around us, I can't see many reasons to laugh so hard lately...  But it seems this is one of the most used emoji globally in 2015

I don't know whether this is good or bad, ridiculous or brilliant... Anyway, let's smile about it :)

Which emoji do you use most?

What would be your '2015 Word of the Year'?

  • very informative!  Thanks for sharing Mary

  • noaslpls, you know what? I feel confused every time I receive that grimacing face showing its teeth... I'm never sure what it means! :D

Elen, the smiley face with squinting eyes is one of my favorites as well... It looks cute, right? ^_^ That's how we are! haha

Bala, yeah you have 'justifed' your point very well! Thanks! :D
I also think that winking face sticking out its tongue is one of the most used emojis. I agree with you about it's a very good emoji to downplay an issue :)

setareh, who knows... Sometimes things are so 'nonsense' that we can be crying with laughter because of pure madness :D

Expector, I would love that word as 'word of the year'! That's one of my fav ones!! :)

Mishaikh, I didn't know this word... it means like 'sleepyhead'? If so, I wonder why did you pick such word :)

  • Another word:
    'slugabed'

  • Great!

How about this word 'nostalgia' for this year?

  • Have you ever been so sad or angry that you burst into laughing, maybe this emoji could be a sign for that feeling. But i love all of these emoticons; they are so funny.

  • I want the "winking" emoji as Word of the year, as i like that most and i think its used by maximum no. of people for sharing jokes, for kidding and even on some serious talks to reduce its seriousness.... I think I justified my point....   :P

  • I thought that the Oxford Dictionaries was more serious and i didn't think that they would choose an emoji as word of the year. Anyway, let's see it with houmor :) As for me, my favorite is the smile with the eyes like this ^^ . About word of the year... hmm... i have to think it.

  • I love to use the above mentioned emoji too, but I used a smiley emoji which shows row of teeth more. And of course an emoji which showing a tongue out. LOL
