The Mysterious Bridge

Taushubetsu Bridge got elected to be a "Hokkaido Heritage" in 2001. That's because this bridge is really rare! This bridge was made as a railroad bridge in 1987 1939, but it sank under the surface of the water because of Lake Nukabira which is man-made lake in 1955. So a new railroad was made and Taushubetsu Bridge has been left in the lake. The water level of Lake Nukabira is very different depending on the season. The bridge is going down under the water at the beginning of June, and it disappears completely in late autumn. The arch bridge seems like glasses when you can see its reflection in the water on a sunny calm day!

It shows up again around January.

Isn't it mysterious that the bridge appears and disappears depending on the season?

  • Hi Fizzy, Thanks for the comments!
Yeah, I think so, too ^_^
  • HI Kaoru,

that so unique because the water level could get high on the season.. thats so cool..
  • Hi Inga,
Thanks for the comment! It's always a bit difficult for me to decide what to write on my blog, but I'm happy when I finished a blog. I'd like to be able to write a blog more often.
You said,"people are temporary at this World!". I think so too. It's about time we should care about the nature. Because no nature, no people.
  • Hi Natasha
    Thanks for reading my bolg!
I searched English pages about this bridge on the internet as well, but I coudn't find any either. That's too bad.
I corretcted my mistake with a line. It was because I wanted to show the readers of my blog where and what was the correction. It is easy to correct a word or a sentence without an evidence on the internet. Some readers may notice a correction, but I think most readers will not notice, because they won't be able to see the evidence. I corrected the important fact about the bridge. It was not a grammartical mistake or a misstake in spelling. So I chose the way that I did ^_^
  • Hello, Kaoru!
Thank you very much for your interesting blog and wonderful photos! Things of such kind always attract my attention.
Certainly, Nida is right! "Many lakes, springs, and sometimes even rivers, have different levels of water, depending upon weather." All correct!
But these facts are mysterious for me! It's seems, the Nature struggles against people! This indicates that people are temporary at this World!..
    Kauro, thanks again!
  • Hi Kaoru,
I've never heard about it, though one of these photos I saw formerly. I have been interested in its history (thanks to you!) and tried to find some additional facts about this bridge in the Internet, but failed, because sites found by me were in Japanese language. The first photo is frightening..... I think it'll be my nightmare! :-)))
The others are not scary, they are beautiful. This story could inspire many science-fiction and fantasy writers!
Reading the previous comments was interesting as well.
Why didn't you delete 1987? You are not at the lesson... ^_^
  • Hi Kaoru,
Considering that it took over 2000 years for the Roman aqueduct to look like this, 71 years is still a short period of time. As Hokkaido is a pretty cold place, I guess the ice formed within the structure has been destroying the bridge quickly.
I want to see fish swimming on the bridge in summer ^_^
    Thanks for the interesting post!
  • deuce and nida, thank you for the comments.
Hardi, you made me notice my mistake. It was a BIG mistake. The truth is the bridge was made in 1939. 2010-1939=71. Now it is 71 years old. I've corrected the above text. Thanks Hardi!!
  • Well, of course, it's not mysterious at all. Many lakes, springs, and sometimes even rivers, have different levels of water, depending upon weather. In winter, due to cold weather and snow, water levels decrease. And in summer, when all that snow melts, and due to heavy rains, water levels increase. Same is the case with this lake, most probably; when the lake dries, it appears, and when lake fills with water, it disappears. Then what is the Mystery, it is a as clear as a bright sunny day.

But of course, bridge is very strong and well built. And it is surviving, and stands tall, in the midst of such harsh circumstances, i.e. different water levels.

Also the photos are really really wonderful. Thanks a lot for sharing with us, something very unusual, here at MyEC.
  • it's only 2010 - 1987 = 23 years old, but it looks much older.. I guess submerging/diving and then resurfacing again all the time, haven't been easy to this bridge.
