Nucha: thank you for your nice comments. The story does not say who the real father was but perhaps the colour of the eyes is a good clue. There are other clues too. :)
You said: I still do not understand the use of "is" and "us" (instead of "are" and "we") "Is you crazy, girl?", "And what can us do, Dr Khan?"
This type of language is sometimes heard in Trinidad and some other Caribbean islands, especially among the older generations. You correctly identify it as non-standard English.
I admire the writer who has a deep understanding of humanities and human nature "He's not a whitie, he's a man of God." "That's as may be, child, but don't forget he does be a man first.". I prefer the beginning paragraph "She was walking lazily,...for any man to want.". It's not easy to immitate his style of writing if I'm not a native speaker. I learn a lot of vocabularies . However, I still do not understand the use of "is" and "us" (instead of "are" and we") "Is you crazy, girl?" , "And what can us do, Dr Khan?" Many thanks for your interesting story.
Josef,
It shows disparity between the rich and the poor, inequality between man and woman... And the last part of the story was done to create a divide between religion. It's as though everything in the story is nothing but cruelty of mankind. And the lesson of the story is hidden... This is a short story but isn't a simple one...
The writer has a complex mind, I think. :-)
Thanks Josef for this interesting story. At first I have thougth"Poor Ginnie ,she was so young, innocent, helpless..."But on the end I had realized that the doctor Khan was right ,when he says "So, your daughter is not such a fool as you think, she's too,too clever". And I have learned a lot of new useful words. Again thanks a lot.
