One cold winter night, there was a beggar, who was busy searching for her food in the garbage bin, it was the day after Christmas’ Eve, and she was positive that she will feel the same festivity. She knew that rich people couldn’t eat all they had prepared and will end up throwing some delectable cuisines to her filthy dining bin.

After an hour searching she stopped and sat, there was no food there. This was not her night and the luck wasn’t on her side. She started to fix her old stained folded boxes, which she considered her precious mattress. Her stomach growled, she massaged the area, there’s a slight pain coming from her gut, she decided to look for food again to her reservoir, the garbage bin.

Just the nick of time, a white colored van suddenly parked at her side without her noticing it. Two guys got off the vehicle and moved their paces towards her. Still, she wasn’t aware of their movements, the older guy tapped her shoulder, and she jolted out of surprise. The guy spoke to her;

“Woman, why are you searching for food at the garbage bin? It’s not a good idea, you’ll get sick eating contaminated food.” He was concerned.

Silence. No answer. She just eyed him.

The guy sighed as he lowered his gazed to her whole body, from face to feet, everything about her looked filthy. Worn out clothes and bare soles, she seemed moving dirt. He turned his back and went back to the van and got something there, a freshly made food packed, he went back to her and handed to the beggar. She unintentionally coughed, she was about to say thank you…the guy spoke once again;

“Woman, you are unwell.” He said. “No Sir, I’m fine.” At least she answered.

“No, you are not. It’s cold outside, no wonder you caught the flu. Have a medication for that, or it will get worse.”

“I don’t have money, I’m only getting my food here.” She pointed the bin.

Without a second thought, he inserted his hands in his pocket and got some bills and gave to her. She was very surprised.

“Sir, you already gave me food. This is too much. Thank you, Sir”

He smiled and said; “No, thanks to you, woman”

He turned back and went back to the van. The younger man asked him why he has to do those things to her. “Always remember, whoever is kind to the poor lends to the Lord, and He will reward them for what they have done.” He went to his seat.

“But this kind of people will take advantage of you, Sir.” The young man claimed.

“Just remember, doing good to other people is doing good for yourself. There is no good that will bear evil. Do good every day, no matter how simple, no matter how small. You’re giving yourself a favor.” The older guy explained.

“But why do you have to thank her?” he asked. “Because of her, I was given a chance to do good.” He smiled at him.

  • Thanks Bet, you think the same way.

  • Yes, we always should try to help others.

    Nice words, Misha!

  • Hello Mish, you what’s good at giving this people? It’s the thought that they can’t pay you back. That’s the best thing! Although, I’m not saying that we are not ready to help all people, well I don’t see helping as a choice but rather an obligation.

    You really seemed to read a lot of books, we can learn from so many people.

  • Once I heard a scholar saying, "give alms to those too whom you see not deserved, just to thank to your Allah, who still gives you when you do not deserve it.
