Is there any shortcut to increase our vocabulary? What do you do when you come across an unknown word? Look up for a dictionary? Okay, fine. Then what do you do when you don’t have a dictionary with you? Sometimes you don’t get enough time to look up the meaning in a huge dictionary or internet. Would you like to guess the meaning? Yes, that’s a way to increase your vocabulary because in this way when you got to know the original meaning, those words can be memorized very easily. I don’t know whether we can call it a shortcut but in this way you can surely enjoy the way of learning new words. It is almost like a game. Now let us come to the point.
Suppose, you came across a word “corpse” and have no idea about the meaning. Can you guess the meaning( suppose you no dictionary and no laptop or such devices so that you can find out the meaning)?
The only way is you can guess! Now how can you guess about the meaning logically? So now you have to know about the parts of a word. A word is generally made up of suffix, root and prefix. The root word is the primary unit of a word which can't be break up into smaller units. So now if you know the meaning of 10 roots , then most probably you can guess the correct meaning 10 times the number of roots you know .
I had a teacher who gave me 10 roots to memorize. Those were very common roots. Those roots were all related numerical terms. I’m now sharing that note with EC. I don’t know how much you will consider it as useful but I think at least it is HARMFUL! Lol !

Wow! Greek root words would be give us to happiness or enjoy learning new words and increase our knowledge of English. :)
not At all smile :-\
Thank you too Anele! I'm proud that you appreciated my blog coz you are the star member! :-)
Welcome Mr. Bob, actually we students are not allowed to look up for unknown words in any kind of device or books so no more alternate ways!
The new touch screen devices like iPad and iPhone have another useful feature to help. You can have a dictionary that will open when you hold your finger on a new word. The Amazon Kindle reader software ( free to download ) has this function for the Computer. My students use it so they don't have to stop reading
When they find a new word.
But knowing the root prefixes and suffixes is by far the best. Thanks for the good advice.
Wow.... so nice of you to share this treasure. Great thanks Caspian!
Suffix and prefix are important for learners and teachers
thank you
Expector Smith, ok! I got to know the fact that "The eighth month in the old Roman calendar" is OCTOBER! not funny anymore! :p Thanks to Wikipedia !

Thank you too Expector Smith :-) It is important to guess meaning because in the multiple choice questions it is needed and in the exam halls we don't have a dictionary with us! Thank you again because i didn't think of the fact October! Well, i will do some research and i hope I'll write a blog on the anatomy of Twelve months!
It can be so helpful to learn about the root words. Check out Tara's writing challenge: root words.
First, you need to know more about root words, and then try to memorize them. Some people may find it hard to memorize the roots, though.
If you know "cord = heart", you may be able to guess the meaning of the following words: cordial, concord, accord, discord, record, courage, core...
So, if you know "corp = body", you can guess the meaning of "corpse".
