Tanya's blog challenge:To be up to

Nina was a diligent country girl. One day she went to give an interview for a lady’s maid. She became a little up to high doh at first, because her skills were not up to date and many candidates made fun of her. But she did not lose heart and asked her old neighbor Mr. John, a former  footman, to help her become up to standard. Mr. John was very poor and was up to neck in debts. So he asked Nina for a handful of money as fee. Nina agreed as she was determined to be up to mark. She worked really hard on her language and manners that she not only passed the interview but became one of the most famous lady’s maids ever.

  • Dear Sidra! I like your story, it is really unusual, but it tells about life of regular people we sometimes forget about.First of all, I'd like to say a few words about the vocabulary you have used. I don't really know if it is OK in Europe, but in America we use the word "employee" meaning people who serve us at home. For example, we employ two people who work in/around our house. They are a middle-aged woman who is our housekeeper and a young guy who does all man's work (repairments, gardening, grass mowing, etc). When we speak about him, we call him "our employee". Now, about your story. It is good. I have to make only a few corrections. Here they are in bold.

Nina was a diligent country girl. One day she wanted to pass an interview for a lady’s maid. She became a little up to high doh at first, because her skills were not up to date and many candidates made fun of her. But she did not lose heart and asked her old neighbor Mr. John, a former  footman, to help her become up to standard. Mr. John was very poor and was up to neck in debts. So he asked Nina for a handful of money as a fee. Nina agreed as she was determined to be up to mark. She worked really hard on her language and manners and she not only passed the interview but also became one of the most famous lady’s maids ever been.

I have underlined the word 'skills' because you tell us about a room maid. Any woman( and even a man) is skilled enough to do such work. I think you meant something different. Maybe, those people were laughing at her manners, outfit or something like that. In this case you should have used some other word, for example, one of those I have just mentioned.

Sure, you can ask me any questions about my corrections. Thank you for a nice story!
