Sound of the four seasons in Japan

Japanese people hear characteristic sounds every season.

In spring, we hear the songs which birds sing in the early morning as if they are delighted at coming of spring. Most creatures seem to welcome the coming of spring.

In summer, we can hear the sound of cicadas chirping. They are very loud, but the sound from a distance have a good taste for me. A famous Japanese haiku poet wrote a poem , it's「閑けさや 岩に染み入る 蝉の声」. I think in English it can be translated as 「The calmness, it is merging into the rock, the sound of cicadas chirping」.

In autumn, we hear the song of insects like Suzumushi(鈴虫). We feel that autumn has come and it has gotten cooler, when we hear it at night.

In winter, we hear the sound of snowing. You may think that snow doesn't make a sound, but Japanese describe the sound of snowing like shinshin .

What sound do you hear every season?

  • Hi Tam,

It's interesting to know what people hear in every season. Yup, every season has its characteristic.

I only have dry and wet seasons. I think I will hear many birds chirping in dry season and it's is more about the smell of petrichor in wet season.

Thanks for your great blog!  :)

  • Hello, April. Thank you for your comment. You seem to like the sound of nature. By the way, what is the sound of trees sprouting like?

  • I love the sound of heavy rains in summer, the sound of cool wind in autumn, the sound of trees sprouting in spring. In my country cicadas making loudly noise in summer but it annoyed me a bit :D

  • Hello, Mary. Thank you for your comment. Shinshin is the sound of snow falling down on the ground. The sound of stepping on the fallen leaves is nice, it is a sound of autumn.

  • Hi, Roman. Thank you for your comment. I am glad to hear that you can hear the sound of snow. As for me, I hear the sound of snow falling down on the ground.

  • "shinshin", what a cute word! ^_^

And what a nice blog talkin' about the sound of every season... I've never thought about it!! It's really cool. Here the sound of summer I think would be similar to yours, but crickets instead. Also birds singing in Spring and I guess autumn here is the sound of the wind or the fallen leaves when you step on them (i love that one)... But I'm not sure which one would be the sound of winter.

A very intersting blog tam, thanks a lot for sharing!

  • Hi Ap Suku! Here in Ukraine we also have 4 seasons. And about the snow, yes! Some times when it is really quiet in the village I also can hear the sound of snow! It sounds like cracking of each snowflake.
