Hi Guys....
As you know, you cannot always tell how to pronounce an English word from its spelling. Sometimes the same letter represent different sound, for example :
U in Busy, Burry, Pull, Sun and Rude. Sometimes a letter represent no sound, it is “silent” or not pronounced. Many common words contain silent letters. Some of them are following :
B in debt, doubt, and subtle
D in Wednesday (the first d)
Gh in though, thorough, and through
H in Thai, John, Thomas, Esther, and in hour , honor, and their. Derivatives such as hourly, honorable, honest.
I in business, fruit, juice, suit and bruise
L in could, should, would, and Lincoln (the second L)
P in receipt and corps
S in corps, aisle, and island
T in Christmas
U in build, buy, guard, guess, guide, guitar, and liquor.
W in answer, sword, two, who, whose, whom, whole, and wholly
Exercise : practice this following, applying the principles previously discussed.
- John joined the air corps last Wednesday
- He won’t need his business suits anymore
- I wouldn’t say he was dishonest
- Fruit juice didn’t suit him
- He got in debt through buying liquor
- There was no doubt about his guilt
- He’d signed a receipt for two cases
