Reviving Your Childhood

Sigur Rós - Hoppípolla from Sigur Rós on Vimeo.

This is a song from Sigur Ros, a band from Iceland. I don't know where Iceland is to be honest since my geography is not that good. Someone shared it with me and it made me curious about what the song is since I'm not familiar with the language.

I asked Google and it is so kind to gave me the link to its lyrics translation.

smiling
spinning in circles
holding hands
the world is a blur
except when you're standing

dripping wet
completly soaked
no rubberboots
running inside of us
wants to burst out of the shell

wind in
and the smell of your hair
i hit as hard as i can
with my nose
jumping into a puddle
wearing no boots
completely soaked (dripping wet)
wearing no boots

and i get a nosebleed
but i'll always stand up again
(hopelandic)

and i get a nosebleed
but i'll always stand up again
(hopelandic)

So, does the problem solved? No, I am still confused what is the connection between the video and the lyrics and can't get the feeling of the song. I read comments on youtube about this video and they said that this song is telling about the childish side of everyone and how we better not to let it go away.

These are some of the comments on Youtube:

* We're all children in heart; however sadly enough, too often do we choose to suppress our inner child... totally forgetting that we're here for one thing.. to enjoy life and make it enjoyable for others; no matter what religion you believe in: only be serious when you absolutely must... be free and enjoy life while it lasts! (cappie2000)

* You didn't really get the message of this song. "Fulfill your dreams", "do what you want today, cause tomorrow you might not be able to", "live your life to the fullest", "live life charge". It's not about teenage pranks. It's about living your life large, no matter what others expect of you. Far too many people die before they take their time to fulfill their dreams, no matter what they are. (bjeil)

So tell me, I would like to know what is your interpretation about this song and the video.

  • a long way to grow up

  • You are more than welcome dear Syubi.
  • Well, that is not a poem Nafis but the translation of the song which I found with the help of Google.

Anyway thank you so much spending your precious time to watch the video. (I really am thank you, this is not a courtesy :p ) Thanks for your description as well, you describe it very well :)

  • Dear Syubi, I think the poem fits the images in the video. For example, when it says "Spinning in circles", this is the act that we do a lot when we are a child or when we play with our friends. However, in the video, it also shows that these seniors also jump and take each other's hands and spin. Most adults don't do this because they think this is a childish behavior.

Again, it says, "Dripping wet". As a child, we don't care how dirty our clothes become when we play because we only care about the play. But, as we grow up, we are more careful about our "Objects". If you make your clothes wet or dirty, people will look down on you and probably think you are crazy since they want you to behave. "A good girl shouldn't do this!", we've heard this sentence many many times. So, we imprison ourselves more and more in the name of adulthood and therefore, we become more dead inside. We don't laugh as much as before. We don't dream as much as before and we don't enjoy our life generally. This is what I think. This video and poem remind us of being a child again, to enjoy simple things in life and be energetic , fresh and fun.

Your post is really nice. I really enjoyed describing it... Thank you so much!
