I can see very often people writing about their beliefs here (muslims mostly) So that 'inspired me' to write this post. Thanks in advance to all these people.
I'm atheist but I'm a very "curious cat" and I like to talk about religion. I've read and heard more than once, the passages about Jesus Christ, Muhammad and Moses. I know the Bible pretty well (my family is Catholic, and I was raised as Catholic when I was a kid), I've also read several lines and passages from the Qur'an and, of course, I know the Torah as well ('Old Testament' for Catholics). I find all these old 'holy books' a very interesting reading because their texts are laden with symbolism.
Why am I saying all these? Well, every time I talk about religion with religious people, there is always a point where someone ask me to read one of these holy books mentioned above... So I always have to mention that I already did, and that I know pretty well how does it feel to believe in God, because I was raised as Catholic and I truly believed when I was a kid. So right after they ask me that, I always feel like asking if they have ever read something about atheism, agnosticism, or any other philosophy or theory that differs from theirs (Nietzsche, Voltaire, Bakunin, Sartre, Hitchens, Dawkins, Krauss...)
I never ask that because, well... I'm afraid I know the answer. For this reason I want to share here just a couple of very small paragraphs (not very extensive because I don't want to make a 'hard to read' blog) from the last book I read, the bestseller 'God is not great' by Christopher Hitchens. He was a brilliant english author, literary critic, journalist and self called 'antitheist':
“Our belief is not a belief. Our principles are not a faith. We do not rely solely upon science and reason, because these are necessary rather than sufficient factors, but we distrust anything that contradicts science or outrages reason. We may differ on many things, but what we respect is free inquiry, openmindedness, and the pursuit of ideas for their own sake.” ~Christopher Hitchens, from: "God is Not Great".----
“One must state it plainly. Religion comes from the period of human prehistory where nobody—not even the mighty Democritus who concluded that all matter was made from atoms—had the smallest idea what was going on. It comes from the bawling and fearful infancy of our species, and is a babyish attempt to meet our inescapable demand for knowledge (as well as for comfort, reassurance and other infantile needs). Today the least educated of my children knows much more about the natural order than any of the founders of religion, and one would like to think—though the connection is not a fully demonstrable one—that this is why they seem so uninterested in sending fellow humans to hell.” ~Christopher Hitchens, from: "God is Not Great".
And here another couple of small paragraphs from a Richard Dawkins' essay (preeminent scientist, ethologist, evolutionary biologist and writer)
"As Einstein said, 'If people are good only because they fear punishment, and hope for reward, then we are a sorry lot indeed. ' Michael Shermer, In The Science of Good and Evil, calls it a debate stopper. If you agree that, in the absence of God, you would 'commit robbery, rape, and murder', you reveal yourself as an immoral person, 'and we would be well advised to steer a wide course around you'. If, on the other hand, you admit that you would continue to be a good person even when not under divine surveillance, you have fatally undermined your claim that God is necessary for us to be good." ~Richard Dawkins, from: "The God Delusion".
----
"Many religious people find it hard to imagine how, without religion, one can be good, or would even want to be good.”
"I prefer to say that I believe in people, and people, when given the right encouragement to think for themselves about all the information now available, very often turn out not to believe in God and to lead fulfilled and satisfied—indeed, liberated—lives." ~Richard Dawkins, from: "The God Delusion".
Thanks for reading.

https://www.dropbox.com/s/ie7ovl5xljunt35/There-is-a-God%20%281%29....
Please be noted that I have not read the entire book, and I am not a scholar, so I will not able put any contribution to the topic, except that I AM A FIRM BELIEVER and do not need any reasoning for that. When we fall in love without any reasoning, why I would look for any reason to become a beliver. (This is my personal opinion). Hope the book may be of any source of seeking the right way to the beliefs.
Thank you AReality!
I'm glad if this post made a 'curious cat' of you too! :)
Thanks a lot for your suggestions Gerardo :)
Yeah, I know about Savater, but still I haven't read anything from him (he's also in my 'pending writers to read about' list).
I didn't know about Hector Abad Faciolince; I liked the link you shared, thanks! :)
Hello Mary, I´ve read a few books (including Treatise on tolerance by Voltaire), but I consider myself a fan of Fernando Savater and Hector Abad Faciolince.
I´m sure you´ve heard about the first one (Savater is from Spain, like you), his book "Politics for Amador" is one of my favorite books, I almost agree with him all time and it´s thanks to him that I know about great thinkers like Voltaire, Montesquie, Robert Owen, etc.
The second one is a great colombian writer, author of many books including "Oblivion: A memoir" which is consider a wonderful book, not only in Colombia. I´m going to share this article by Abad (sorry my teammates, it´s in Spanish and I know this is a website for learning English), just read it, and tell me what do you think about it.

Have a nice day my friend.
Mishaikh, I've just seen that you can upload files here in EC if you write a blog post entry (the paper clip icon) So probably the easiest thing is if you upload that file in a blog post.
Then you can also link here your blog, so we can check it out :)
Oh thanks a heap for that info Gerardo! As I replied in a previous message to another EC member, there are so many different 'labels' for every philosohpy, theory or 'school of thought'... we can't stop learning :)
I also mentioned what is to be a 'theist' but now, thanks to your information, I know is more or less similar from deism but not the same: both (deist and theist) believe in a creator (God) but just for theists that creator has an active influence in human beings' life. Thanks for helping to make this clear :)
I think you're a 'Voltaire fan' --I've read you mentioning him before in other blog :) So probably you know better than me that he was also very critic with religion. My point (in that part where I mention different names) it's about to encourage (or suggest) people who just have read the Bible, Qur'an or Torah, to read about whatever other different 'theory' (atheism, agnosticism, theism, deism, taoism, buddhism, hinduism, confucianism, shintoism... there are so many)
Mishaikh, if you want to share a file (like a pdf book format), I think the only way is if you upload that file that you have in your computer in a file-sharing site (there are many free sharing sites like: dropbox, Google drive, 4shared...) Once you upload your file to the cloud, you'll get a link that you can share here (copy/paste) so people can get your file just following your link.
Another option is if you just write down here the title of that book you want people to have a look at, and people who are interested can look for it themselves in the internet.
Hope this can help. Now I'm curious about that book Mishaikh :)
Hello Mary, about Voltaire, he believed in God, but did not believe in a god personally involved in people's lives, like the Christian god. This is called Deism, deists believe although god exists, people should rely on logic and reason and not traditions of a religion based on a holy book.
This is my source: https://simple.wikipedia.org/wiki/Voltaire
Have a nice day.
@Mary
What about if I want to attach a frome my folder and not from any URL?
Hello Mary, it´s good to see you again... very intereting blog about religion.
Well, I´m Catholic like Estanis, but it doesn´t mean I have to accept all things that they´ve said or done. As you said, there is no sense trying to follow 'word by word' standards made thousands of years ago..." time has changed and of course I´m willing to change.
In my case, I think there are many things more important than religion, I agree with you, I only have one life, so I just try to do my best, and I think my religion helps me in this hard task.
Thanks for sharing this blog, I like the third quote about "fear punisment and hope reward", it´s a masterpiece...
Have a nice day my dear friend, take care yourself...
