Reading is the only way for me to stay in touch with English langauge, since I do not have the opportunity to use it in my daily life to communicate. While reading one acquires a language, because he enters a world where he can find love, hate, death, life...as Julius Lester says:"Open a book and enter a world that must be as beutiful as flowers opening in the spring"and in an other extract he says:"Letters made words, and words made visible the felt unseen." Besides, reading helps to learn vocabulary,my first enemy, to learn how to build conversations in so many different cases. One can learn a whole sentence and make a use of it in conversations, it also helps vary one's writing skills. This is reading as far as I am concerned. What about you?
yeah.I do agree with you but there still are other ways to learn a foreign language such as watching movies, listening to the radio or music and chatting with people.I think that reading, listening, speaking and writing are complementary and any teacher can never neglect one or the other.
Teaching English is a very difficult task especially when there is no good environment for the practice of all the four together.
For this, one should keep in mind that he or she is teaching a foreign language not a native one in an environment that does not really help him or her in this task.
I wish we could exchange more ideas on TEFL and TESP 'teaching English for specific purposes'.
