The word "Proverb" is well-known and understandable to everybody. In French language the equivalent of proverb is proverbe /pʀɔvɛʀb/ and in Arabic مثل /maθal/. Many scholars tried to define the word proverb. Woldgan Meider is one of them. He states that a proverb is a short generally known sentence of the folk which contains wisdom, truth, moral and traditional views in a metaphorical and memorisable form and which is handed from generation to generation. It is clear that proverbs are used in our daily life. So, they play an important role in our conversations.People use them to support their arguments, to give advice, and to make people behave in a certain way. Proverbs have many functions. Honeck proposed two major functions, these are literary function and practical function. The former refers to the use of proverbs in prose, poetary and songs. For example, in Romeo and Juliet by Shakespear many proverbs are used such as "the weakest goes to the wall." Practical function refers to that proverbs can be used in headlines, titles of books and ads because they attract concumer's attention. In fact, proverbs are more than that. They reflect our culture. Therefore, they should be studied at schools. Understanding them means understanding our culture and others' as well. This will make us understand each other very well, and it helps in communication.

Thank you for sharing this blog. I'd like to share proverbs I remember when I was an elementary student.
Empty vessels make the most noise --> those with the least talent and knowledge usually speak the most, speak the loudest, and create the most fuss — whatever makes their presence felt the most.
Still water runs deep --> said about a person who says little, but who might in fact know a lot.
United we stand, divided we fall --> If we work together we can be successful. If we fight each other we will fail.
The grass is always greener on the other side --> the things other people have or their situations always look better than your own, even when they are not really so.

Here is some of my favorite proverbs:
1. "Actions speak louder than words."
Just saying that you'll do something doesn't mean much. Actually doing it is harder and more meaningful.
2. "Practice makes perfect."
You have to practice a skill a lot to become good at it.
3. "Too many cooks spoil the broth."
When there are too many people trying to lead and give their opinions, it's confusing and leads to bad results. Jobs and projects should have one or two strong leaders.
4. "Easy come, easy go."
When you get money quickly, like by winning it, it's easy to spend it or lose it quickly as well.
5. "Absence makes the heart grow fonder."
Sometimes it's good to be away from your partner, because it makes you want to see each other again.

A very interesting point at proverbs is that some of them equal in many cultures. They might differ a bit in the use of words, though their content often are the same.
Nevertheless there are also some proverbs that came up just because some cultural difference. I mean ppl in different aereas not always experience the same.
Hence we may say proverbs are a good mirror of cultural difference a well as cultural community.
