Phrasal Verbs: This is a challenge to anybody who wants to attempt it.It is an example of how we English speakers love to use phrasal verbs. They are a large part of our everyday informal conversation. Phrasal verbs are combinations of verbs with prepositions (acting as particles or pieces of the phrasal verb) to change the meaning of the original verb. For example,"When do you normally get up?" "Get" normally means "receive." But this phrasal verb usage actually means,"When do you normally arise from bed?"If you are brave and adventuresome, can you "translate" this paragraph from informal phrasal verbs to formal English verbs without any phrasal verbs? The reward will not be a trip to an exotic country, nor will it be a large cash prize. You will have to settle for my recognition of your effort in accepting this challenge. I know, this is not a marketable reward. My recognition is not valued by the world. But your satisfaction with taking on (Oops! a phrasal verb) the challenge and perhaps learning something should be enough for you. Who will attempt this challenge?I really get off on English, but what puts me off is when some native speakers put down English learners who hardly get by and can't keep up with them. How can they get away with putting learners through that? Instead they should look out for them, put up with them and come down from their own pride and get down with them on their level. They should look up to learners as brave people who pull themselves up from the initial challenge of learning English and run up against phrasal verbs without giving up. They just go on with their studies and get over the challenges and eventually get through them. If we don't hold up our English learners they will get down on themselves and will drop out of class and do away with all their efforts.

  • Hello Bill,
I was really forced by your phrasal verbs but I wanted to try it. Please kindly inform me with your evaluations.Thank you.
  • I really want to start learning english even though some native speakers critize the english learners who hardly manage and not to be able as the same level as.
How can they manage that without giving punishment them?
They should be care of, tolerate and omit their own pride and as being helpful solving their problem on their level. They should motivate them going on study, it is feel that they admire learning struggle, encourage the learner who is demoralized from initial challenge of learning english.Teach them how to face difficulties of phrasal verbs with self-motivated.Learners and their native speakers should be overcome the challenges and eventually managed all together. If we don’t support our english learner they won’t be keen and stop participating the class and get rid of their efforts.
  • Hello Bill!
I am really interested in what u have done. So, i want to ask u a question, please help me?
I'm in Vietnam which country don't use English as the offical language, so my english doesn't have good condition to practise, of course it's very terrible. In the end of this year, maybe i would join in university in Singapore, but now i still confuse in using language, especially vocabulary and listening. Could u give me some ways to improve it?
    Thanks you so much!
  • Iza,
You did an excellent job of translating phrasal verbs into a more formal form of English. You got the meaning exactly as it was intended.
  • Hi, Bill. Phrasal verb is quite difficult for me since Indonesian phrasal verb has slightly similar meaning with the verb itself. By the way I'll try it, but please correct me.

I'm really interested in English, but what makes me disappointed is when some native speakers underestimate English learners who hardly understand and can't follow them. How can they discourage the learners by doing that? Instead they should pay attention to them, encourage them and admit their own pride and support them on their level. They should consider learners as a brave people who force themselves from the initial challenge of learning English and try hard in phrasal verb without stop trying to learn it. They just continue their studies and overcome the challenges and eventually succeed in understanding them. If we don't support our English learners they will be desperate and will leave the class and will ignore all their effort.

    How is it Bill?
  • Now , i 'm not able to put down any translation . Maybe ,in two years...
  • Mircea,
I truly enjoyed your rendition of my lesson. You are a very clever person. You converted my lesson into a very interesting example using chocolate. It shows that you understand the meaning of the phrasal verbs I used and you were able to use them in another context. Kudos to you. What is a kudo? It is a recognition of a job well done.

  • Anourine,
Nice usage of phrasal verbs. Also I am very happy that my little lesson helped your students. Good luck in teaching English. It is a challenge sometimes and we are always looking for new ways to teach it.
