Word of the Year

Aloha there.

Here I come with my last blog... The last of this year, at least.
As every year, I'm always curious about which words are considered the most popular ones, taking in mind some events of the year. So, there it goes:

Oxford Word of the Year (2017)

Youthquake.
"A significant cultural, political, or social change arising from the actions or influence of young people".

A very silly word for what it could be something cool... but that is usually reduced to do an idiotic viral challenge.

Dictionary.com Word of the Year (2017)

Complicit.
“Choosing to be involved in an illegal or questionable act, especially with others; having partnership or involvement in wrongdoing.”

Oh, the human being... always trying to do their best...
This could have been the word of the last years in my country.

Collins dictionary Word of the Year (2017)

Fake News.
“False, often sensational, information disseminated under the guise of news reporting”.

'Fake news' is today legitimate news. To guess what is a fact and what is fiction is the new 'game' for the audience to play... hooray! ¬¬

Other Words of the Year (2017)

Antifa. Involving, belonging to, or relating to a antifascist organisation.

Milkshake Duck. A person or thing that initially inspires delight on social media but is soon revealed to have a distasteful or repugnant past.

Echo Chamber. An environment, especially on a social media site, in which any statement of opinion is likely to be greeted with approval because it will only be read or heard by people who hold similar views.

Newsjacking. The practice of taking advantage of current events or news stories in such a way as to promote or advertise one's product or brand (<---- We have seen it many times this year after every terrorist attack... I find this one especially disgusting.)

Gig Economy. An economy in which there are few permanent employees and most jobs are assigned to temporary or freelance workers.

Unicorn. Denoting something, especially an item of food or drink, that is dyed in rainbow colours, decorated with glitter, etc. (yes, we definitely live in a world full of unicorns and rainbows... sigh)

----

Now, tell me what is your personal 'Word of the Year'.
That word that defines how was the year for you.

And last but not least: Leave a word I can take with me in 2018.

I wish you all a great end of the year,
I hope the new year will bring us a lot of new beautiful stories to tell.

Thanks.

  • Onee, 'Sincere' is a good word but sometimes hard to make 100% use of it, you know... ;)

Thanks for leaving me the word 'able'... I think i'm gonna need it :)

Camel, okay... enjoy your own city.

Emma, I like your personal word :)
Thanks a lot for leaving me the word 'passion'. I always try not to forget that, but it's good when someone helps you to remind it :)

Mishaikh, I find kind of interesting that you didn't know that word... Yes, Eon is a term that helps to describe different periods of the Earth's existence that lasted hundreds of millions of years. Like the ones needed for the human being to evolve, for instance.

I'm glad to read you pick that as your word of the year. Thanks for dropping by!

Thank you all for dropping by,
I hope you had a very nice beginning of the year!

  • I have come across with number of new words this year.  In almost of the end of year I very first read a word:

EON = an indefinite and very long period of time.

Such a small word, and see the meeeeeeeeaaaaaaaaaaaaaaningggggggggggg.  That is why I chose it for the word of the year (for me myself).

  • My personal word of the year is "change" :)

I suggest you take "passion" with you in 2018, because if we put a dose of passion in whatever we do, it will be successful, indeed :)

Have a great time on New Year's Eve!

  • Camelabad: A city in which camels live. :)))(inspired from the city hyderabad in India ::::)))

  • And one word you can take with you in 2018 is ... ABLE. ^^

It is also for me and everyone. ^^

  • A very informative blog, MARY. ^_^

My word of this year is..... SINCERE.

  • Thank you MARY! ^_^

  • Awww thanks Romanito! How nice of you...

Thanks for dropping by and leaving so many nice words ^_^

  • Hi MARY!I knew some os these words before!:) And sometimes I use to joke, using such words as "flying pink unicorn". For example if someone ask me "Where have you been?" I can answer "I was drawing the flying pink unicorn" :D

Well... I don't want to seem obvious or banal by saying that my word of the year is "MyEnglishClub". So let it be "learning" or "beginning" or "awakening" or "friends" or just "MARY" :P

Sorry, there are so many words that it is difficult to choose one...

Mmmm... Just one word for you... Maybe I am to naive or silly but please take the word "love" I think it is not a bad word:). Although I want you to take such great words as "friends" "peace" "happiness" "curiosity" and like that and like that...

Thank you MARY! Yes, I hope so! :)

I wish new year bring you a lot interesting and funny situations and positive changes!

    Thank you!!!!
