MyEC: More than a Chat Room: Listen
We all use MyEC for different reasons. My primary reason for using MyEC is to encourage English learners to write. I love writing and I hope my passion for writing will rub off on the members here. I think blogging is an excellent way to practise and teach English.
Others use MyEC to share poetry or watch English videos or learn new vocabulary. Many of you have found groups with people who have like interests. You forget that you are practising English because you are discussing things that you love to talk or write or speak about.
Some of you (though these people probably don't read blogs) use MyEC primarily (or even solely) for the chat room. The chat room is a great part of MyEC because it allows you to practise English in an informal way. You can make friends from all over the world. If you have a quick question, you can ask someone in the chat room. You can also invite a friend in the chat room to have a video chat using something like Skype.
Unfortunately, the chat room has some bad eggs. A bad egg is a person who wants to spoil the fun for other people. These chatters have no use for MyEC other than causing trouble. Do you see these chatters blogging in English? No. Do you see them practising their speaking skills? No. Do you see them uploading useful pictures for learning English or taking video challenges? Probably not. Many are banned on a weekly basis under various names.
Each week we receive dozens of requests to reinstate banned members. In most cases it is about something that happened in the chat room. Can I share a little secret? We don't read these messages and we never respond to them. It's not because we don't care. It's because we do care. We want to put our energy into caring for the English learners and teachers who are here for the right reasons. If a person gets banned incorrectly, it is a shame. If you've been banned incorrectly, please come back and blog about your experience (we know you know how to come back). If you don't want to blog you could upload a video. You could even tell your story in the Audio Speaking Group. Whatever you do, don't hide in the chat room because there is so much more to MyEC!
A huge thank you to all of the members who put their energy into many different areas of this club.

I hope there is a solution for this problem because it is being irritating and very annoying.
By the way, I like the new chat. It allows me to chat through iPad. Thanks a lot!
They are some people are being rude to someone called "Sawsan" thinking her me. And absolutely we are different people. But those people just don't believe. One of them came to me in Skype saying very rude words because, as he thinks, I hide myself in two accounts. How can I solve this problem?!
Well said Tara.
Yes...Tara...I wrote my first comment just when I was a new member. There were some rumors about ban system and I didn't know whether or not they were true. Even now, I still see the same rumors.
Is there any blog post that discussing this issue? I guess most or some members don't know about report members. Some of them even think that members can't be banned because other member complained about them.
They don't know about what proves are, how to take screenshots, etc. I think it would be better if you or one of moderators write about this. So, they have a clear picture about ban system. And no members who were banned could come back and spread rumors about it.
@Ranu We never ban good longterm members without a very good reason. I often warn members before banning them. In fact, I rarely ban members. The majority of the time I ban spammers. I do sometimes ban members for not using English or for using abusive language if there have been complaints.
However, there was a short time when the automated system was banning members for posting repeated messages on walls. (The system believed it was spam.) We have removed this feature on our site. A few good members were incorrectly banned during that time and thankfully some of them came to us and we apologized and brought them back in.
@+Verve+
Members just use different email addresses when they add an extra account. They sometimes change their profile names after. It's not difficult to do. On Facebook teenagers do this all of the time. They have one account that their parents know about and one account that only their friends know about. There isn't much we can do except ban them and hope they get tired of their own silly game. Please continue to report members who are not here for the right reasons.
Thank you!
Tara
Are there some mechanisms before you ban members? Like give them warning or something. I have suggestion: If the member is a long-term member who never or rarely cause any trouble, how if the moderators give her/ his a warning first before they ban her/his.
Maybe he/she was really on bad emotions or really get provoked by other members (who are only looking for troubles) and wrote something that eventually she/he regretted.
I also see that some new members can really confuse about the rules and they were doing something because they didn't know the rules.
That's just my suggestion. I think that the moderators and you, Tara would never ban people without any considerations. There are many members here and it would be hard to manage and put attention to all members.
I think I'm behind in the comments on this blog! I'm just reading through them and I can see that some of you really want explanations for why people are banned. I have never seen that text below that Syubi shared (I've never been banned) and had no idea that this is what it told people who were banned. Very interesting! That explains why so many people write to question why they have been banned. It might be nice if we had a way to show moderators that a member is "long-term" and deserves a warning before being banned after being reported.
Ohnie: I appreciate what you said and I agree that long-term members probably feel hurt if they are banned. However, I am easily accessible and I think people can contact me privately if they need to and feel an error has occurred. I don't think banning happens in error very often, though we aren't perfect. I can't think of a single example when a person has been banned for no apparent reason, so if it has happened I don't know about it. Banning happens when another member reports a member for bad behaviour and usually has proof. Members have also been banned for harassing moderators and admin.
Let me ask your opinion on this example:
Today I banned a member who wrote nasty remarks on a member's wall (with very inappropriate language). The member instantly wrote to me asking why he/she was banned. Should I waste my time and write back to this person?
Thanks for all of your help everyone. This is your club and we do listen to your concerns! Keep the comments coming.
