I recently attended a conference in China. Several medical researchers or experts from English-speaking countries, such as the US, were invited to the conference, too. Most of the audience, however, were Chinese. So, you bet there were a few interpreters who helped translate what the English-speaking lecturers were giving into Chinese. Don't get me wrong - I was not one of the interpreters, but I did ask a few questions in English when it was time for the audience to ask.
I asked in English "Dr Rogers, I have a question for you. I was wondering if you just mentioned that the device was available only in some of the big cities in the US?" Dr Rogers smiled and asked the interpreter to translate my question into Chinese in case the others don't understand what I just asked. Dr Rogers must have known that most of the Chinese who attended the conference were not good at understanding spoken English. It's quite true that most Chinese doctors are not good at English listening or speaking, even though they may have started learning English when they were in elementary school. They are good at reading, though - they can read English books, newspapers, magazines etc. The reason for that is they don't have to speak English or they don't have to communicate with others in English. They speak Chinese all the time. In China, even medical textbooks are written in Chinese. That can be a problem when they need to communicate in English - though they do learn medical English at university.
Dr Rogers answered my question and we exchanged some words. He might have wondered "How come this guy's English is so good, while...?" I bet he may have guessed that I might have learned English in an English-speaking country, but he must have had no idea that I am a moderator of MyEC.

Thanks for the comment, viviana!
I'm glad we're now friends - thanks for the firend request!
Most Chinese people don't really like to speak English, though they know English is such a important language. And, students in China have to take an English test before they are accepted into a university - I assume you know China's well-known "college entrance exams".
Thank you for the interesting blog.
I assume that the Chinese doctor from this joke: http://my.englishclub.com/group/jokegame/forum/topics/chinese-delegate, was also a EC moderator :)
@tawfeeq
Thanks for the comment, and for sharing what medicine English is like in your country! If the doctors had to speak English in daily life, the situation wouldn't be the same.
Yes, MyEC is such a good place to learn English.
Thanks again!
@mitran
You are so lucky to have married such a good husband! May you two love each other forever! I look forward to your next blog or comment!
Hi doctor;
We have the same problem in Iraq. Although the students of medicine college study their lessons in English, but their speaking are poor . That is seemed certain whenever they speak beyond their medicine. because they look at nothing except medicine words . whereas English have many fields.
English club gives essential learning for those working in every field .The variety of topics urge readers to learn many new words increasingly , besides communication with different races in skybee , and lessons of conversation all that may contribute to enrich our knowledge .
Thank you for enjoying us . really it is wonderful blog .
@Manuela (Forget-me-Not)
Thanks for the comment! Good question! It's hard to say what my English was like before I joined this club. Sometimes, you need to take some English tests to know your English level. I think I was already an advanced learner before I joined this club. It could be years to improve one's English to an advanced level. Thanks again!
@mitran
I enjoyed your story about your husband's English show! I can tell you and your husband are such a happy couple - living a happy life together! Thanks for sharing your happiness with us!
Yes indeed Expector, your english is so good, I would be curious to listen to your accent. But let me ask you something; how was your english level before you became a member of EC ?
@Anele
Thanks for your nice comment! I love English, without which I wouldn't have had all the degrees (master's, doctorate) and all the achievements as a doctor. You know, in China, you need to take English tests from time to time, not just in school or at university, even after you've found your job. I wonder why English is so important in a country where most people don't really speak it.
@Yasemin
Thanks so much for the sweet comment! Yes, most people here say my English is good, which makes me so happy. The tittle of this post was written the way you'll see in newspapers - looks like news! I'm glad you noticed it!
@Nafis
Thanks so much!
@nida
Thanks for the reply! Sorry I had no idea you are the same old nida. It's great to know you are back! You really made my day!
Thanks for your kind words, Expector Smith.
And you already spelled my name correctly. So I think there is no need to tell you how to spell my name. Btw, I'm same old nida. You always forget that(just kidding!).
