My Journey to Develop Reading Habit

Read newspapers. Read online news. Read short stories. Read articles. Read all kinds of sign boards. Read magazines, books and novels. Have you developed your reading habit yet?

Reading skill is essential. Reading is beneficial and feasible activities.

When I first started my secondary school, I used to borrow English story books from the library. On the way home, in the school bus, I took out and read it. As I recall, I was not really reading it, not to mention that I did not even understand it. However, it excited me to know my friends looking at me reading English book. It was also thrilling to own English books, even for a while.

Reading English novels was never enthusiast me. If truth be told, I was reluctant to even try it. I was more comfortable reading novels in my native language. I was discouraged by too many unfamiliar words in English novels. After five years in the comfort zone of reading Malay novels, I finally made an effort to change to English novel.

To encourage me reading English novel I had to find novel that highly interest me. It took me one hour after browsing through twelve shelves. I finally found one book that intrigued me. After reading the synopsis at the back page of the novel, I decided to buy it. Ended my searching, grabbed the book and paid at the counter. One novel was enough for a start.

Back home, I opened a Prologue page. How could I read it, too many unfamiliar words. But I was prepared. My one and only dictionary had become my loyal companion since then. Like a hospital I.V had been inserted into my skin. I carried it everywhere I go with my novel. Everytime I encoutered unfamiliar word, I would open the dictionary. It also seemed to me I had been reading two novels at the same time. Can you guess how many time I opened that dictionary by just reading one book. It amazed me that the dictionary was and is still intact. This had been going on for quite sometimes.

I collected as much as vocabulary I could and jotted down in my small note book. I often encountered same words. If I forget any of it, I would just open my note book. My efforts had been fruitful. At some point I had no longer in a dire need of the dictionary. Reading has become more and more interesting without having refered to dictionary often.

  • Nice work Mr. sunil

  • That is great..you possess good positive attitude towards learning..it will help you a lot in all your life..enjoy !

  • Yes Mr Sunil, I will try to improve further in my next article.

  • correction. ....it happens many times (in my earlier comment)

  • My comments given:

When I said 'I carried my book everwhere', suddenly the hospital I.V came into my mind. The dictionary is just like the I.V. attached to my body for short period of time (now clear). I tried to relate but it seems I fail (that's not a problem, it happens many time when we are trying to improve the quality of our work). I don't really know to explain. I see as the reader, you can't relate it to my story, then I think that I.V item should not be there in the first place. Am I right? (no, proper wording will make it as appropriate example).

  • Welcome..i believe that knowledge grows as you share it more and more, hence I keep doing it when time permits.

  • By the way Mr Sunil,

When I said 'I carried my book everwhere',  suddenly the hospital I.V came into my mind. The dictionary is just like the I.V. attached to my body for short period of time. I tried to relate but it seems I fail. I don't really know to explain. I see as the reader, you can't relate it to my story, then I think that I.V item should not be there in the first place. Am I right?

  • Dear Mr Sunil,

I really like the way you give suggestions and comments. The corrections you made are very helpful. Indeed, sometimes I get confused to use singular or plural noun, especially after word like 'any'.  Also sometimes I want so much to use not just ordinary words, I end up misusing them. I really appreciate this, thanks a lot.

  • Hi, I have tried to make corrections with some comments. You have very good understanding of language grammar, just few things are required to be taken care. I enjoyed reading your `journey` so far.

Read newspapers. Read online news. Read short stories. Read articles. Read all kinds of sign boards. Read magazines, books and novels. Are you yet to develop your reading habit?

Reading skill is essential. Reading is beneficial and feasible activity (because `reading` is singular. It is already represented by `is`. ).

When I first started my secondary school, I used to borrow English story books from the library. On the way home, in the school bus, I (would or used to..these words are used for any of our past habit) take out and read them (because you have used `books` in earlier sentence). As I recall, I was not really reading them, not to mention that I did not even understand it. However, it excited me to know my friends looking at me as if I was sincerely reading English book. It was also thrilling to own English books, even for a while.

Reading English novels never really inspired me. If truth be told, I was reluctant to even trying (even doing, even attempting etc)it. I was more comfortable reading novels in my native language. I was discouraged by too many unfamiliar words in English novels. After five years in the comfort zone of reading Malay novels, I finally made an effort to change to English novel.

To encourage me reading English novel I had to find novel that would highly interest me. It took me one hour after browsing through twelve shelves. I finally found one book that intrigued me. After reading the synopsis at the back page of the novel, I decided to buy it. I ended my searching, grabbed the book and paid at the counter. One novel was enough for a start.

Back home, I opened (`a` removed) Prologue page. How could I read it, too many unfamiliar words again. But I was prepared. My one and only dictionary had become my loyal companion since then (very good construction). Like in hospital I.V had been inserted into my skin, i carried it everywhere, I go with my novel (there is some improvement required. I need to know what you exactly wish to say here). Everytime I encoutered unfamiliar word, I would open the dictionary. It also seemed to me I had been reading two novels at the same time (very good expression). Can you guess how many times (`many` represents plural) I opened that dictionary  just by reading one book. It amazed me to know that the dictionary was and is still intact. This had been going on for quite sometime.

I collected as much vocabulary as (earlier `as` relocated here like `take as much money as possible`) I could and jotted down in my small note book. I often encountered same words. If I forgot any of it, I would just open my note book. My efforts had been fruitful. At some point I had no longer in a dire need of the dictionary. Now, reading has become more and more interesting even without having referred to dictionary often.

  • good idea for the beginner learners to start doing the same
