Moderated chat summary: Food Chat Topic

Date: July 3rd, 2012
Chat: Food taste, Fast Food
Hashtag used: #foodchat (#FC)
Moderated by: Darius
Chatters: Ario, Grace, Chuck, Jer Targayen

It had been a long time ago since the last time I joined moderated chat. I have been talking with some members who are not regular chatters. They said they wanted to join the chat room if there is any moderated chat. So, I guess someone needs to revive it and asks other members to join.

So, I shared to main room about moderated chat and how to do it. Since, the members were chatting about Indonesian foods and their lunch menus, I offered Food chat as the topic.

But, there was another member who willing to join me and took the leadership, Darius. We made the hashtag shorter from #foodchat to #FC. We were discussing about food taste changing, as we know that we have many chances to taste foods from different nations. So, he asked if this situation changes our tastes of foods.

Then, we moved from that question and discussed about fast food. Will fast food change our children's eating habit? Why is fast food so popular today and people are interested to eat it more than other foods? Is it dangerous to eat fast food and what's the solution for this problem?

Grace joined us as I stated that one reason why fast food is so popular because commercials on TV and the advertising. She added that that is how fast food franchises attract kids and if the kids want to eat the fast foods sometimes parents can't do anything about it.

The problem:

I think it was an interesting chat topic. Darius asked interesting questions and some other members gave interesting answers as well. However I found it was quite difficult to share to other members about how to do moderated chats. Even when I just shared the link. For some members, the hashtag # and @ symbol made them thought that it was not fun.

So, what do you think about moderated chat? Do you want to join us on the next moderated chat? Or do you have topics to discuss?

    lol, maybe we should suggest different topic for moderated chat :)

  • Lol...we should not be there in #Food Chat.

  • @Nadira

    Thank Nadira :)

  • Fantastic way of  encouraging  members and to bring out the best to chat Ario, thumbs up to you:)

  • @Surawan

    Lol. I didn't think about football club, just I noticed that it would be confusing if a new member entered the chat room.

    @Anele

    Well, I was lucky enough to join moderated chats when Tara introduced it for the first time. When a new member came to main room, and wanted to chat with her, she would explain that she was leading a moderated chat. Then, she asked the member to join and announced that she would not reply private chats or another chats outside the topic. She reminded the other members several times, that she was leading a moderated chat and would ignore private chat and anyone who didn't join the moderated chat.

    @ Gee

    Why not? You can even start a moderated chat anytime you want :)

  • Ario , When I came to your blog ,first, I read two chat boxes before reading the full details of your blog . I though #FC meant Football Club :)) and I was wondering how football was related to foods :)) until I read the whole blog , then I knew the chat was about food :))

  • @Grace

    It's OK. I already guessed that you had to do something, so you stopped to follow the chat. And I'm happy to see that you're interested in joining us in next moderated chat.

    About the dish, it looks yummy :) What are the ingredients? Caramel, peanuts, jelly and cracker..am I right?

  • Hello Ario,

    First of all, I'd say sorry for disappearing the main room without saying bye this afternoon. I had some things to do at that time.

    You did a good job with Darius today, and I enjoyed talking with you all like this way, especially the topic about food, which is my favorite. :D  As long as I am available, I'd like to join you again.

    Here is a dish for you. :)

    I think it's just Rajesh who is too generous to call me like that :) Honestly, I had been stopped to chat in last two months and started to chat recently. Now, I found some new members who are there to help others, so I feel encouraged. And Nadira is back already.

    I agree with you about the troublemakers. I have seen myself when the chatters pressed the ignore button and started to discuss useful topics, they were bored and left. I will definitely contact you for the next moderated chats.

    @Tara

    Thank, Tara. I believe we could get 5 leaders. I keep finding some members who eagerly to start a useful topic. Let's try to ask them join this movement.

    Yes, I think we should encourage other chatters to get used to this moderated chat. I will try my best to introduce this slowly as well as the topics you suggested.

  • PS-If you think it works better without the symbols, you can try it that way too. The main reason to use them is to direct a comment to a specific person (@) and to show that you are participating in the chat (#). People will get used to these if you hold regular chats. Great work! Thanks for summarizing.
