maybe or may be

Maybe it will happen and maybe it wouldn't! Who can give an assurance. He may be waiting for me or move ahead. This may be the last chance to meet with him. Anyway, this morning is really gloomy. There are banks of clouds in the western direction. Maybe it will rain profusely. Jona called her last night and asking her to meet with him. They day before they had a fight and decided to be parted. Now, he may be in his office or maybe he is still asleep. Trina is still confused. Maybe she is wrong  or it may be true!

So far I understood,  Maybe is an adverb. It means perhaps. it should be written as a word. It refers probability. Like, Maybe she likes me ( there is a chance not to like).

On the other hand, may be is verbal construction. Here, may is modal verb and be is main or auxiliary verb. May be is similar to might be, could be, would be. Example, He may be in his office.  It may be the case. There may be some chips in the cupboard.

'Maybe' and 'may be' can be so confusing.
