To day, the trial to judge a farmer family in Haiphong city (Vietnam) commences. One year ago, they was seized and accused of "murder" and "resisting persons in the performance of their official duties". This tragedy began from wrong decisions of local state authorities at district where farmers have lived. Those decisions was promulgated to withdraw land of that family regardless they had hardly worked and spent enormous expense for years to build their farmland.
Upon many years trying to claim the upper state authorities for such derogating activity of local officials without a satisfactory result, they had rendered a fight against officials who came to enforce land withdraw upon them. As a result, four polices and two force men was wounded. The whole farmer family was arrested immediately after that. However, this noisy case had stirred a communication storm and had central government joint to investigate. 50 local officials have been determined to be involved within this case, some of them had been penalized by the internal disciplines.
Back to the trial, it sounds there will not be a slim chance for such farmers to receive a tolerant judgement from court and government. I believe on no account will this state pays attention to the motive of activities those farmers did, even when government clearly has understood that fighting back to the enforcement team was the hopeless endeavor of that family to protect their property. After all, to deter another circumstances in common, this state shall need some sacrifices.
Long time ago, I would long for a justice life after leaving law school. But now, hardly can I find it to pursuit and bring career passion up..

Hi Anele,
Judgement is given today for that farmer family. Court sentences the household to a 5 year imprisonment. The others are judged with suspended sentences. At least, there is a little bit thing so called "justice" in this country, my friend..
I do not know how to contribute for making our justice system more active, transparent, my friend. So shy to admit this when I am a lawyer. It is also the reason why I prefer working as a consultancy counsel to working as a proceeding lawyer..
In some aspects, Anele.
I do not know how lawyers' role in Phillipine is, but in Vietnam it is not efficient in criminal trial like this. Normally, a judgement has been completely concluded prior to opening trial session. Therefore, justification of lawyers during the hearing is formalistic. I cannot answer your question, Anele, just hope this legal system will be changed in the near future..
