Yes, your doctor or even your parents will advise you to drink plenty of water. They have reason to do so, though.

Your body needs water to work properly - in fact, your body fluid accounts for most of your body weight. That is, you need to keep supplementing (drinking) water to make up for the everyday loss of your body fluid.

It's not a good idea, however, to drink too much water. Then, how much water is too much water? Some people may sugget you drink water even though you're not thirsty. They argue that it may be too late when you really feel like drinking. Besides, the bottled water or drinking water seems harmless.

So, it was not surprising when an outpatient told me that I was the first doctor who had suggested she shouldn't drink that much water. She kept going to toilet or urinating and she thought there must be something wrong with her urinary system. It turned out, though, there's nothing wrong with the system.

Your body has to get rid of the extra water if you keep drinking. Drinking too much water will dilute your blood, and may even lead to coma (a serious condition). Sometimes when you're ill, you may have nausea or vomiting, which makes it even harder to drink that much water, even though it may be helpful in the fight against the disease - more toxin could be excreted via the urine.

So it makes sense not to drink too much water.

  • Thanks Onee!

  • Thank you so much for the information, doc. Indeed, an excessive thing is not good.

  • Hi Risty,

    Yes, your body need water to function properly, but you don't need to drink too much water. Be careful with the 'myth':)

  • Sir Expector, yeah, this is the first time that I read something like this about water consumption, I thought drinking too much water helps us to revitalize, refresh and renew some cells, I also thought that this is the reason why the skin don't age fast and prevents sagging. Hmmm... this is new to me.

    Thanks for sharing this. :)

  • @Ehab

    Thanks!

    @Evangelina

    Yes, overhydration can be lethal. Unfortunately, so many people tend to believe what is not really true - there's no convincing evidence, indeed.

    @Fe

    Yes, we need to drink water, but not that much.

  • Water is needed to hydrate our body.  We need to drink, at least, 8 glasses of water daily.  The water should be 200ml per glass.  Or, maybe add one or two more glasses of water.  However, more than than is already bad.  According to a sport doctor, if we drink too much water, we deplete our potassium.  Low potassium has bad effects on our health, and could be life threatening. or fatal.

  • I agree with you . thank you

  • @Luci

    It depends on how much water your body needs or can take. You could drink as much water as you feel like drinking. Nobody really knows how much water a person needs to drink every day - some say you may need to drink 6-8 cups a day:)

    @Just

    You do have a point there. I'm afraid there's no such an exact limit. It seems you're enjoying your drinking - take your time to drink every glass:)

    @Fr@nk

    Yes, the color of your urine can be used to estimate if you're drinking enough water. Be careful, though, people with diabetes tend to drink a lot of water and discharge large quantities of urine, which is called 'polyuria'.

    @Arisha

    Great! Professional comment!

    @Icha

    Thanks for the comment. I'm glad you used a medical term 'dehydration'. Yes, you need to drink water to rehydrate when you keep sweating - sometimes intravenous fluids are needed.

  • Hi Expector,

    What you wrote was very informative, indeed. I have ever heard about this, too. But the problem is, I still haven’t known what the maximal liter of water that we need to drink is. I thought, It suppose be adjusted with our activities as well. If we have much outdoor activities, we need more water as well to avoid dehydrated. Considering our brain’s content is around 80% of water. So, all this time we only knew about the harm if we have lack of water inside our body.

    So, this written has expanded our knowledge and thanks for that Sir Expector.

  • I think drinking too much water increases the burden of kidneys, they have to do extra work to excrete extra water from the body. Only 1.5 to 2 liters of water is required to maintain normal functions of the body.
