Is public oral speech different?

Hello friends!

One of my friends I was discussing with him yesterday about a very interesting topic happened to him personally. Firstly let me give you an idea who my friend is. He is a very educated person, has two qualifications as a bilingual, speaks English like a native speaker where he is not a native English speaker and owning position in a local English club as the first rank holder in English debate competition club. However, he never presented himself abroad to give a public speech to audience the point we are here for.
As a matter of fact, I was shocked when he said " my friend, a week ago, I was like dumb person faced my black day I have ever had when I could not perform well in my first public lecturer to audience from over the world in English debate competition club same to ours that we have in my country", I said why? He said " I really don't know what reasons were behind my failure " I said " but I know you are great English speaker. He said " yes but it seems only around me" and started describing such a great disappointment he had.

Do you know why this person and maybe others fail to give a public speech when we know they are up to do so?  Is it personality matter, fear to encounter public, training is not adequate. etc.
Please comment.

  • That is right, I agree with you JahJah, he might not ,as you said, have no experience on giving successful speech to public first time he faced them right away since he is always sticked to his followers in which he has already had profound confidence to speak with fluently. If he ignored the audience around him and acted spontaneously, he might tackle the trouble. However,  I think he gave a great intention to fear caused by encountering enormous number of folk made him acted weirdly.

    Thanks JahJah

  • Maybe he has a phobia in the public. He cant express Himself to the public the way it should be. If you are confident and know what you are doing and saying be proud of it.Just be yourself.:) Just act that there's no people around you and speak loud your speech. Have a nice day ahead.

  • Hi Lamlom and Stephen

I also wait for a precise answer by natives or whoever has an experience in such a matter. It is still quite strange to me either.  For confidence, It might be a reason but I myself don't think that so as he is very professional at speaking Lamlom.

On the other hand, I don't know what formal structure you meant Stephen!

    Thank you both.

  • Yes... I'm waiting this discussion answered by some natives. Btw, it might be he wasn't speaking in formal structure, I don't know either.
