It's a blessing if love is mutual.
Suppose I love someone and expect the same love from her, (this is right to wish so), but the wish of such exchange, depends upon the love in return. When it stops or diminish, the love in heart diminishes. But In case I love someone without expecting that I will have the same love in return, then MY LOVE WILL BE FOREVER. (This is the higher level of love, where lover does not care whether beloved loves him or not, but his love continues).

The best way to refresh feelings is to do something new, something what can pull us out from boring life and routine. Travelling, surprises and pleasant gifts are nice idea. Because we were so plunged into our commitments that we forgot to enjoy the life.
Anyway every couple is a world and i,m not telling you this is the key to the happiness in the marriage.
Sometimes people use words I LOVE YOU just like that. But they are not empty.
