" INTONATION "

Guys....Im back again :) talking about intonation now :D

Intonation is the raising and falling of the pitch of your voice as you speak.

It is very important for you to realize that native speakers react to intonation. If you use the wrong kind, your listener may misinterpret your intention. They will certainly be confused, and they may even be insulted.

Your intonation, for example, can signify that you are making a statement or that you are asking a question or you have no finished speaking.

I suggest you to follow three general rules in your intonation.

Let your voice fall to its lowest pitch at the end o a statements and at the end of question beginning with the “WH word” (who, whose, where, what, when, whom, which, why, and how)

I’m tired                                       Where’s my notebook?

It’s blue                                        When are you leaving?

She’s Spanish                                What do think of him?

That’s all right                              Who go with you?

Come back tomorrow                     How did you know that?

Say it again                                   Why don’t you tell me?

Let your voice raise to a high pitch at the end of a question, which does not begin with one of the “WH word”

Has he gone?                                       Is it raining?

Do you like it?                                     It’s blue?

Did you lose your book?                       I can’t go?

Does that look all right?                      Going home now?

Are you sure?                                      Anything else?

Let your voice stay on the middle pitch if you pause before you finished a sentence.

I bought a table….a chair….and a bookcase

We don’t need them….but they look nice

I’ll return them….. if you want me to.

We can do without them… or wait while longer.

Whenever your practice sentences, follow the three intonation patterns.

Practice the following applying the principal previously discussed

  1. What’s the matter?                   12.    yes, she is.
  2. I’m tired.                                   13.    Going home now?
  3. What you’ve been doing?           14.    In a few minutes.
  4. I’ve been working.                     15.    You can’t go.
  5. Have you?                                 16.    I can’t go?
  6. All day long.                              17.    It’s raining.
  7. Where did you work?                18.    Are you sure?
  8. in the office.                            19.    Look out the window.
  9. Who else was there?                20.    Oh, that’s too bad.
