Immigration causes some problems for Afghan children, in and out of the country, in terms of culture and language. For Afghan refugees in Iran there is no specific citizenship and their children suffer from various difficulties. Afghan children, who are born in Iran don’t receive an equal treatment in terms of education. They struggle to get accustomed with a new language, culture and a new environment, the time they are in Iran and the time when they come back to Afghanistan. When they are in school in Iran, they have to adhere and adapt to Iranian culture. They have to learn the language. For me it was very difficult to adapt myself to the culture and its customs. Iranians have a different culture compared to Afghans. Because of the low level of Afghan life and poverty, most Afghan children are familiar with the concept of hard work and consequently obtain good grades at school. For instance, in my school I had the highest grades. The second position was gained by another Afghan student. In short, the atmosphere and the culture had an opposite impact on Afghan children in school and made them more competitive and productive. The quality of Iran’s education system is very high. It is designed for Iranians. Some Afghan children can benefit from it. It depends on the teachers. Some teachers have a discriminatory attitude towards Afghan students. I remember, once my English teacher asked Afghan students to leave the classroom and said he wanted to talk with the Iranians. I felt very sad and I was very curious about the subject he talked about. After the meeting, I found out, he had talked about Afghans strengths and wanted to encourage other student to follow. This incident and separation gave us more motivation to work hard. However, the culture and language of Iran has its effects on the Afghan refugees. On the other hand, when Afghan children come back to their country, they face the same issues in terms of language and culture. It seems to be impossible to change themselves and adapt to the new culture and language.Anywhere you live for a long time has its effects on you and you face difficulties if you come into a new environment. I was born in Iran and I lived there for 22 years. I studied there and I grew up with Iranian culture; I loved the people and their tradition. After my family and I got back to Afghanistan, I felt so unfamiliar with the culture and Afghan people. I thought that I did not belong to this country and I knew nothing about it. Afghan refugees live in neighboring countries for a long time. Afterwards, they come back to their country; their children face a new language and culture, which is very difficult to get used to.Language is a very important aspect of communication in a society. We Afghans and our neighbor country Iran, have a common alphabet. On the other hand, we have a very different accent and slang. Watching movies in Afghan TV never give me a good feeling, everything seems to be strange. I don’t have a good sense of understanding about Afghan jokes and proverbs. Especially at work, I suffer from reading the letters which are written by my colleagues. I feel like no one knows how to write. Recently, I have found a chat room which is operated from Iran. I talk to most of the girls and boys in there. I share my feeling about being in my country but, feeling like being a refugee. Sometimes I talk to guys like myself and they say they have the same feeling. I often blame the Iranian government and I say if they had a good regulation for people like me and if they gave us the Iran’s citizenship we would never had to face a new culture and a new environment. In conclusion, the environment and culture have very strong impact on your belief. No matter where your parents are from, the situation and language have their impact. For most of the refugees, it is very difficult to get familiar with a new condition. For adults it could be easier to get accustomed, but for the younger generation it is a very controversial issue.
