When I worked as a teacher at the Al Ain Women's College in the United Arab Emirates, I asked a friend who is an English teacher why English was becoming the international language when there were other languages spoken by millions worldwide eg, Spanish and Chinese. He told me that what is best about English is that "everything can be done with 26 letters". English is a very versatile language. I had been learning Arabic script, which has positions above, on and below the line, so I immediately recognised what he was talking about.
