How to Increase Your Vocabulary

When you learn English language, one of the most important things is to keep memorizing new words. You should create condition for you to use these new words and thus putting them into your long-term memory.

Many people face a problem of not keeping new words in their memory for long. You seem to write new words down, learn them and in some time you completely forget what they mean. The main reason here is that you don’t use them. Here are some tips for effective memorizing of the new vocabulary.

1) You should always write the words down to your notebook, writing pad, special vocabulary book, etc.

2) Don’t write all the unknown words down. Write only the kea words that are crucial to the understanding of the text or those which you frequently see and you are actually interested in their meaning.

3) Before looking into the dictionary, try guessing the translation of this word.

4) Very often words have several different meaning. Write down only the one that is suitable for this particular text.

5) Use associations when you are memorizing difficult words.

6) Try to remember the context I which this word is used, i.e. the phase or sentence with this word. Learn words with their “surroundings”.

 7) Learn how native speakers use this word. The Internet can help you with that. Google this new word or a phrase with it and visit English sites. It would be great if you found idioms and phrasal expressions with new words.

8) Make up several sentences with new words. You can even come up with a short story or a dialog with all the learnt in a day words.

9) Find out what the synonyms and antonyms for the new words are.

Where can you get new words:

— watch movies, TV shows and series in English with and without subtitles;

— Read books, magazines and web resources in English;

— Listen songs in English and sing along;

— solve puzzles and play games in English.

Don’t forget that in any case learning English is a hard work that requires patience, persistence and purposefulness.

  • Thanks everyone for the comments! @nida, the 5th one means that you can creat a special image in your mind for a certain word. You may associate a certain word with a word from your native language. Or, for example, you can memorize the word "capital" deviding it into two simple words "cap" and "tall". There are so many rooms for creativity. I taught this technique my friend from Chine, who now works for www.assignmentjedii.co.uk with me.
