How do you want to be remembered?

80 years ago a man picked up his morning newspaper and to his horror and surprise read his own obituary.  The newspaper must made a  grievous mistake because this man was still alive!  But like most of us this man was curious to find out what people thought of him and what people would say about him after he dies.  The article said “Dynamite King dies.”  He was quite taken aback by the description that was made of him.  He was described as the “merchant of death” because this man was the inventor of the dynamite and he became very rich manufacturing these weapons of destruction.  He was moved by these words and asked himself “Is this how I want to be remembered?”  From that point on he devoted all his money, time and energy to works of peace and human betterment.  Today he is best remembered no longer as the merchant of death but as the founder of the Nobel Peace Prize… for this man was Alfred Nobel.  (The Story of Alfred Nobel)

We want to achieve our dreams, to be happy, but to live our lives  intensely is to live life completely and whole because the sacred is all of life, not just bits and pieces of what we want for ourselves.  If we live thinking of others we become so much more than just our tiny space of existence, we expand our lives to everyone and this is how we are remembered and this is how we can witness a miracle as  Albert Einstein once said “There are two ways to live your life, one is as though nothing is a miracle and the other is as though everything is a miracle.”

  • Good deeds make man remembered with good name, and blessed.

Bad deeds make man remembered with bad name and cursed.

  • Thank you for your reply,
You beat me. I believe completely that if a person has repented about a mistake, this is a good thing. So I agree with you in your opinion.

  • I would like to be remembered as EC blogger :D
  •  @ Expector Smith : That's the goal, we get a lot from stories of people and helps us to think about our lives too. Glad to share it with you.! :)

@Samuel : I'm happy you know a lot about this great guy, we can all start wrong but it doesn't mean that is how we should end.  Hope it inspires you as it did me. :)

  • Thanks for sharing the fun story!

Maybe I should think about it, too:))

  • Nice value blog,
Alfred Nobel was a great man, grew up in a poor family so didn't complete his studies, but he insisted to complement it and became a genius chemistry engineer, after years of effort and perseverance he succeeded in inventing dynamite .. Then invented detonate explosives device, which without it can’t be the use of explosives. He was a patient throughout his life. And did not marry, but he invented dynamite.
But I see that he's caused damage for all humankind, and was the cause of the deaths of millions of people by his Invention. The Nobel Prize wills not re-life for those who died because of dynamite. Thanks for Sharing.
