EMPRESS MARKET
Empress Market is a famous place located in Sadder, Karachi, Pakistan, which traces its origin to the British Raj era. Today this market is considered one of the busiest markets for shopping grocery in Karachi. A wide variety of commodities are available at this market like fruits, vegetables, meat, fish, tin packed as well as raw, stationery, dates, dry fruits, lentils, rice, chicken. It also has many pet shops.
The market was constructed between 1884 and 1889 and was name to honor Queen Victoria, Empress of India. Empress market has a historical significance as it was situated on the grounds where a number of native sepoys were executed in a ruthless fashion after the Indian Uprising of 1857 (The Mutiny of 1857). Accounts mention that the sepoys had their heads blown off by cannonballs in an attempt to suppress any mutinous feelings among the locals.. The foundation stone of Express Market was laid by the-then Governor of Bombay, James Ferguson in 1884. The building was arranged around a courtyard, 130 feet by 100 feet, with four galleries each 46 feet wide. The galleries provided accommodation for 280 shops and stall keepers; at the time of its construction it was one of only seven markets in Karachi.
