Have you ever thought about your communication style?

I returned home after four months. I couldn't drop my bag off. Mom gave me a big hug. My face was covered by mom’s clothes, and I had been feeling safe and pleasant with her unique smell.

I left my home when I was in 7th grade for study purposes. I used to come home mostly once every 3 or 4 months.

However, I knew her next words to me!

Oh, my boy !! you are more skinny than before! Don't you eat enough? You look sick!!

Although I gained two kg.

Mom, please stop saying this!! Let's measure my weight!! Therefore I must do that to make her calm!!

After 6 months, when I returned my weight increased by 3 kg more.

But my mom asked me the same question again.

Can you guess what was the communication style between my mom and me? Supportive? Analytical? Direct? Or initiative?

Complicated?

Okay, take a look at the following table where four communication styles and their characteristics were stated.

Communication Style	Characteristics
*Supportive*	Dislike to change, Indecisive, Careful, Patience, Dependable, Co-operative, prefer praise to given privately, Doesn't like conflict at all.
*Analytical*	Precise, Exact, Logical, Organised, purposeful, Diplomatic, Will really give an answer unless asked. Does Not easily express emotion.
*Initiative*	Sociable, enthusiastic, Persuasive, Convincing, Talking more than listening
*Direct*	Quick and deceive. competitive, independent, and confident. Result oriented, ambitious, goal-oriented, and driven, others may perceive her as strong-willed or demanding.

Ans: There are two communication styles: Mom to me and me to mom.

1. Mom was Direct to me. She used emotion and force to convince me.

2. But I was Analytical to her. Because I was saying. Mom look at me! I have gained 2kg/3kg, Let's measure.

that means I was Precise, Exact, Logical, Organised. Diplomatic….. but not emotional like mom. I focused on data, avoid talking unnecessary words.

Moreover, I was diplomatic ... I was not sure whether it was 2kg but I said to make her calm.

Would your mom agree with how you perceive your and her behaviour? :) ;) Me and my mom's memories of our dialogues usually do not coincide.

Hi, Fake.

I would like to add something to Supportive because Your mother seems to be loving, caring and protective.

As for me, I think I'm the direct type but also influenced by all other styles, depending on my mood, the situation and the people I'm dealing with.

Nice post.

You can call me a chameleon. I can be any of your styles depending on many factors: people/person I communicate with, situations, places, my mood, the mood of my interlocutors, aim of communication, etc.

@@Tricky Question: What was the most irrelevant stuff in my post? : When I saw your post first, I would not even imagine that the post would be about communication. Lifestyle, diet, water preserving, types of water, supermarkets....well...whatever but not what you speak about. So, from my point of you, it is an image you used here.

  I think your dominating Communication style is Direct.
  
  But I agree with you, your CS is different based on circumstances, Smart and a good communicator use mixed style but still has a dominating style.
